Put a fence around your garden and lock the door.

Or

Desactivate full moon in the options.

There is also a no-more-zombies-generated-at-full-moon mod: http://modthesims.info/d/486695

But I still suggest the fence if you have Pets, otherwise deer and other things will still eat your plants.

Setting the moon cycle is in the game options from the main menu (the three dots in the lower left corner). Basically you're setting the moon to a phase other than the full moon and it won't change, so no zombies. But also no perks for Witches, Fairies, or Werewolves (not sure about Vampires).

For the fencing solution, go into Build Mode and you'll see fencing as one of the things you can add. It doesn't really matter which fencing you use since as far as the game is concerned, a fence is a fence is a fence and it doesn't matter whether it's wood, stone, metal, or just a big hedge. The rest is just what looks nice to you. Once you select the type of fence,

(1) click at the corner of the area you want fenced in and drag it to the next corner. Your fence should be at least one or two squares in from the edge of the lot. This prevents some routing problems.
(2) click at the new corner and drag it to the next and so forth until the area is completely enclosed.
(3) on the left side of the fencing window and at the bottom, you'll find the button for gates, click it to see the selection of gates. Again, the game doesn't care; a gate is a gate is a gate. So pick one that looks best to you
(4) add one or two gates into your fence. The game has a hard time putting them at corners, but dropping them into the middle of a run is simple enough as long as there is enough room (one or two squares of fence on each side)
(5) return to Live Mode, click the new gate and select "Lock"
(6) decide whether only you, your household, or specific Sims can pass through (role and service Sims aren't available)
(7) done

Zombies will not spawn in an area where they have no path to the edge of the lot and since they are excluded by the locked gate, your plants are now safe from them (and from other Sims and various wildlife, depending on the expansion packs you have installed).

I've been using fences to keep out unwanted sims for a long time. I've also been using fences to keep animals out, but with my newest family this is not working. The entire large backyard is properly fenced. The gates are always locked for everyone but household members. They do not have any pets. I tried changing to the highest possible fence and this still did not work. The deer should not be able to get in, but they do, and they eat the garden plants. If anyone knows a solution, please let me know. :steamfacepalm:

Okay, I think maybe I found the answer for myself. You can buy several garden gnomes in the "Buy Mode". They are not the same as the ones that the game gives you randomly that teleport around your property. There is one for cats, one for dogs, and one for wild animals. Once you place it in your garden, you can set it to prevent that type of animal from entering your home lot. I'm hoping it works like it says. I'll let you know if it doesn't.

P.S. You can also set it to encourage those same animals. I found a thread where someone said the "encourage" setting doesn't work properly, but it was also an old thread, so maybe they fixed it, or maybe it was a fluke that just one person experienced.

I uninstalled Pets years ago because it was causing too many problems. This year I've learned to lower the fps on my older games to match what was commonly used in the years the games were published. This has solved a LOT of issues for my older games, including Sims 3.

I re-installed Pets and after playing at least half a dozen different families, most of whom had gardens, the game suddenly decided to give me this problem with the wild animals getting into my fenced garden. Usually, the fences are all that are needed. They aren't working with my newest family, so I did a search on the forum and found this old thread, which finally gave me a possible solution.

So far, the gnome seems to be working, but I did see a deer on the front of the lot, and the gnome is supposed to keep them off the property entirely, so we'll see if the game keeps trying to teleport them into my family's garden. It had to teleport the last deer out once I got the gnome in place and a sim trying to shoo him out. The shooing didn't work. I unlocked the gates for him, but the deer didn't know how to get out, so the game teleported him out. I'm guessing the game teleported him in there in the first place since, as I've said, the fence is very high and the tall gates were locked.

what if you surround everything with a thin pool - a moat, basically

Well, seeing as the game probably deliberately tried to spice things up for me by teleporting one into my fenced yard, that might still fail, and I would lose a lot of garden space in the process. One of the family sims is a serious cook/gardener. Nevertheless, I'll keep that suggestion in mind in case I get any more criminal deer eating her prized produce. :steamhappy:
One possibility is you made the fences too close to the edge and so the script for the deer was forced to spawn inside rather than outside. Seems weird you chose this thread to necro given it lacks anything about this gnome solution you found out about.

The thread is about something (in this case, a zombie) eating garden plants. This first answer in the comments talked about using fencing, which I had already tried, so I thought I'd ask again if anyone came up with a solution. In the meantime, I did more searching and found a thread where someone spoke about gnomes. Since, again, this thread is talking about creatures eating garden plants, instead of deleting my question, I thought it might help to leave the information about the gnomes for someone in the future who has the same issue and does a search on the topic of things eating plants.

That's the third time now you've mentioned this other thread and yet you haven't so much as linked it yet!!! If that reply was meant for me, well, it's a pretty bad one considering you didn't comment at all on how close to the edge of the lot your fences are, I already gave reasoning for why it might make a difference last time, I was well aware fences were already mentioned.

Although your reasoning for necroing this thread maybe better than Snootch who did so to advertise a new guide, it fails compared to simply thanking the other user mentioning the gnome solution in that other thread. Necromancy maybe treated lightly on Steam thankfully, however other communities consider it a banable offence, I suggest you do so lightly if at all. The other user may appreciate knowing their suggestion is still continuing to help people far into the future and although NitePinkeve22 here seemed to appreciate this particular necro, said user also only replied to the three responses received with as many letters, oof... suggesting the OP is a particularly hard user to converse with similar to another user who sometimes posts here, Devs, who I along with someone else beside me had a particularly hard time trying to help in another community, sadly proves to be a massive waste of time as he didn't want to do even the smallest things to help us help him.

This thread was quite old before the recent post, so we're locking it to prevent confusion.
