Just because have stunning graphics doesn't mean is the best...is short is very repetetive the free drive mode is boring. Not to mention the police force side missions only allow you play as one I mean you can't have several buddies helping you in the pursuits.
The best of NFS series I should say is Most Wanted Black Edition 2003 and Underground....end of story.
The second best has to be the PS2 version of Hot Pursuit 2 because it's the best iteration of the real, classic Need for Speed gameplay and style, I just love that game. Oh, and it has an awesome soundtrack.
The third best is Hot Pursuit 2010 in my opinion: again the game's style is back to the roots of the series and on top of it comes a very elegant, focused design. The game has no story, no silly paintjobs, buying sub woofers and pink glow for your cars and all that bs, no boring sandbox gameplay in an otherwise lifeless city. Nope, it's all about the races and the sense of speed and it does an absolutely stellar job in both of those things. SPEED came back to Need for Speed with this game, Underground was more of a dressup game than a racing game for me. Most Wanted (the original, not Criterion's) was cool though apart from the horrible driving model and the cringeworthy cutscenes, that game had good police chases and a nice atmosphere.
And I don't give a crap about graphics.
Yeah the graphics are nice and are still holding up in 2020, but a lot of other aspects in the game are complete garbage.
1. AIs rubberbanding - you can never really outrun them with skill, it's mostly a matter of luck. For a while I got angry about this and restarted races until I get Gold, but right now I don't even care if I don't finish first, as long as I complete the game (at least the Racer part) I can uninstall it and forget about it.
2. Car steering is a mess - when you're driving slow, your car is impossible to control, it only gets easier when you reach top speeds. And even at top speeds, the controls feel stiff and you never feel like you've mastered the controls, instead you're constantly fighting with them and hoping you don't crash in a stupid way which, would otherwise not happen if you were playing a better NFS game.
3. Lack of vehicle customization and being forced to play certain cars for certain races completely strips you off any identity. Even NFS 3 Hot Pursuit 1 (1998) is better in terms of allowing you to pick a car, stick with it and adjust it in a certain way to fit your play style.
4. The challenges where you have to reach the finish line for a certain amount of time are too hard, it becomes even harder when you're struggling with the pîss poor car controls and the risk to crash everywhere if you attempt to take some shortcut.
5. Headlights turning on and off completely randomly in night races and when you need them they are off, and are on when you don't. And you can't control it - this only contributes to crashing more often and forces you to boost the game's Gamma only to be able to see better in the dark - a lot of annoying and unnecessary hoops to go through.
6. The thing where you press Spacebar (E-brake) on a corner and your car automatically switches into some drifting state, which feels absolutely unrealistic .. I'm mostly talking about the transition from normal driving into a drifting state post E-break usage.
7. The favoring of exotic cars over more normal cars - after you pass the first few races, you're only getting more and more exotic cars, like the game is trying to tell you how better and more fun they are and also forcing you to use them, but then again if you put a basic Mitsubishi against a Koenigsegg, the latter will dust the former giving it no fighting chance.
I can't think of more issues at the moment, but I think those are pretty game-breaking and I'm not having much fun with the game, only forcing myself to finish it so I don't have to feel bad about when I see it in my library.
I don't understand your issue with the traffic in either Hot Pursuit (2010) or Undeground (2003). The traffic in both games is the same, ti's the pîss poor steering in Hot Pursuit that leads you to crash into traffic. I've played Underground (2003) the most out of every NFS game and I regard it as my top favorite and for me it's the best in the series, even better than Most Wanted (2005) or Underground 2 (2004). All those issues I mentioned above DO NOT exist in Underground (2003).
The steering is perfect and once you get the hang of it after playing for maybe an hour or so for the first time, then you can complete the game on Hard with little issues, I've completed it on Hard a couple of times.
The AI doesn't rubberband and it drives at its own speed, if you're faster, a better driver, you outrun them pretty quickly and they can't catch up, if you play Stadium track on 10 laps and Hard, you can even pass the AI a couple of laps if you're good enough... good luck with that in Hot Pursuit...
The best thing about Underground is you can use your very first cart and upgrade it to the point where you can even face the last boss with it and you will still have a chance.
I think Underground (2003) is the best game in the series and it needs a proper remaster where the mechanics are 100% retained and the only additions are better visuals and more active traffic. For me the only issue with Underground is how dead the city looks, regardless of where you are - even with traffic and other racers, it feels like a ghost town and it depresses me, but otherwise it is the best NFS game I ever played and the one I had most fun with.
And this one here ... it's a misunderstanding. Probably the last decent NFS game was Carbon (2006), and after that, they just became garbage. Even NFS Heat 2019 still doesn't feel like a NFS game at all - it's almost like an RPG with racing cars. EA no longer understand what NFS players liked about the previous games and aren't even trying to create a good NFS game anymore, they just shell out game after game, where the only thing that improves is the graphics, but the gameplay degrades with every game.
Time to throw my two cents on this reply to an extent, though I do respect this i'd say most of this is dead wrong.
1. You can easily outrun the AI with skill. I've done it numerous times, and if you're actually struggling to get gold in career when it's easy to gold utmost all events on your first try, then that tells me you haven't played much or haven't reached far to get into the learning curve of each tier/series.
2. I'd say this is true for some cars, but not all of them. I've never felt stiff controls really, because once again learning curve is a thing and you're quite inexperienced. Once you have actually learned it, you'll probably see the light at most.
3. Here we go again. Customization doesn't make a good game. Good gameplay does. NFS games after 2010 with the exception of 2012 focused on this and look where they ended up. Majoritally worse than 2010. I've played every single NFS game to exist, and i'll be honest. There's a few fun ones, but none of the new era has passed 2010. The only one that came close was Rivals but as we all know, it's a buggy mess.
4. Once again, easy as hell. You just need to learn how to drive. The first time I played the game I golded all events, with the exception of The Ultimate Road Car(Mclaren F1 Timetrial) since hairpins were hard to deal with.
5. I answered this on a different thread earlier of yours. But the controlls have that.
6. No comment on this one, that is something that most had no issues with. E-Breaking is to only be used on certain times anyways.
7. Obviously a hyper car will demolish a sports car. The game did its job of allowing you to progress to a higher series and most of the time they tend to increase the challenge once so. Proof of this? Try beating Double Jeopardy under 4:50:xx. It's a very good challenge.
So far from what i've read from this is Underground > Hot Pursuit 2010, because i'm bad at the game. I've played every single NFS in the franchise, and UG1(2003) has the worst rubberbanding by far when it comes to AI. Heck it was known for it by most fans.
My top five NFS games are as follows
1. NFS HP 2 PS2. The perfect and solid gameplay that stuck to the roots. Shame the PC version is different and lacks the desert tracks.
2. Need for Speed: Most Wanted - Definitely a solid game, but the handling of certain things ruined it. Definitely the best story in the franchise.
3. Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit 2010 - Even more solid gameplay, graphics aged like fine wine.
4. Need for Speed: Porsche Unleashed - Definitely got most things right and it was a solid game.
5. Need for Speed: Carbon - Good enough story, disappointed that a few things were completely eliminated, cops had no reason to be around. Loved the Canyon duels though.
Honourable Mention - Underground 2.
Heat was decent, and it lacks content. It got boring fast. Don't get me started on the trash heap that was payback and 2015? I don't think 80% of players liked falling through the ground for no reason only to restart over and over and hope it didn't do that.
