Dragon Age: Origins - Ultimate Edition

Dragon Age: Origins - Ultimate Edition

NoBody Feb 7, 2023 @ 1:47am
This game just appeared in my library, should I do something about it?
So here's the story - I owned the normal version of Dragon Age on Steam and on a whim decided to buy the ultimate edition. After I realized that a potentially larger discount may be coming (I bought it at 66% off when it sometimes goes for 75% off) I refunded the game.

All is well and good... Except for the fact that it just randomly appeared in my library again for unknown reasons and I can download and play it if I want.

My refund history shows that I was refunded my money, so that can't be it, but I'm worried that something is amiss here.

Has anyone experienced something similar before?

I bought the game on steam back when it came out years ago. This version just popped into my library. Weird.

Everyone received a free upgrade because Steam removed the other version and didn't want to support multiple versions anymore.

I also own Dragon Age: Origins (base game) but now Dragon Age: Origins - Ultimate Edition showed up in my account.

It looks like EA upgraded the base game to the ultimate edition for everyone.

I see, I'm glad to know that I'm not the only one.

I'm even more glad since I refunded the game before this happened!

Too bad I have the DVDs of Origins and Awakening, I doubt I qualify. It's NOT connected to Steam. Unless there is some way to upgrade the DVD versions?

Same for me, the Ultimate Edition also appeared in my library. Thanks for the info! Great to see how game studios and/or publishers sometimes honor existing customers. +1 for Origin, I guess. (Isn't Origin and EA the same company?)

Origin was EAs DRM store. Now, it is just called the EA App.

Origin is not a company. Origin is/was an IP of EA's digital storefront/launcher app that's now plainly converted to EA app.

You can. The DLCs were made free last year along with the Mass Effect franchise because the Bioware points system was being sunset.

Some extra stuff can also be cross checked via: https://www.ea.com/en-au/games/ea-downloadable-extras

Hm. If "Origin" came from "Origin Systems", then it was a company of some sorts. And Wikipedia confirms this: "Origin Systems, Inc. was an American video game developer... The company was purchased by Electronic Arts in 1992." I guess that after the takeover EA wanted to keep the "brand" Origin and named the launcher after the former company, but what do I know... Wikipedia again does seem to know: "EA acquired the trademark Origin when it purchased Origin Systems in 1992." So, that's settled. I only ever knew Origin from certain games like Ultima Underworld and System Shock (where Origin Systems was "only" the publisher, LookingGlass was the developer) and later by the Origin launcher. It wasn't until much later that I realized, "hey, Origin is actually EA"! That came as a shock... but again, what do I know. I guess I'm not a typical gamer (if such a thing exists)...

Well, Origin Systems is/was a company, but not what was being referred to here. I can understand the confusion. At least as far as IP is concerned, Origin Systems ≠ Origin. I don't think I would be wrong in saying that they named the platform after the company (as cute as that sounds), but it's still not the same thing. After all, Origin Systems was acquired by EA, but isn't exactly "the same company" entirely (because the acquisition just merely makes Origin Systems an EA asset and is why EA largely gets distribution rights to games made by Origin Systems).

When EA launched their steam wannabe a decade or so ago they wanted to give it a short and catchy name, they looked through their IP vaults and origin was what they came up with. And yes, they had the option because they owned the IP of the then long dead Origin Systems company. It felt wrong back then, like violating the dead... They still had to buy the origin[dot]com domain from some completely unrelated (maybe manufacturing) company though. :D

Thanks, so it's actually +1 for EA then. Who would have thought... (definitely not me!) Anyway, it's a good move and I appreciate it.

Yeah I just seen this myself . I was looking at my Dragon Age games and noticed that this version is not in my Library. Glad they did this but sadly took a long time being I owned base game and expansion pack for ages and never really wanted to snag the DLCs at the price they were asking....
