Using mods by any chance? That would explain a thing or two.

Have you installed QUDAO Fixpack ?
The only mod worth having IMO

no mods what so ever but I've done my googleing and apparently this is a known issue on modern rigs. There is a work around incase anyone else is having these issues

Hi SaltyWarChief, this is ZDuke17, and I will try my best to help you. I apologize for the text wall, but believe me, it isn't as bad as it may seem. Most of what gives it more text is merely an explanation and misc. Info that goes along with it. Here are things we can try as of now:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JL1oFoOaNwk

The video above is an excellent informative and helpful video. It both details how to fix the game, as well as how to mod it conclusively showing how to install some various mods. It mentions the LAA Patch as a fix for a crashing related memory leak issue, and Qwinn's Fixpack as fixes for the game. Definitely, worth watching, I stand by it. A fellow by the name of, SilasTender, in a previous discussion I assisted in providing it. Perhaps you would only have to do fixes mentioned in the video to solve your issue.

The Affinity Fix for Origins: The game has the design-build for older lower count core cpus compared to modern cpus. Using modern cpus by default with Origins often results in strange glitches, crashing, and bugs in the game. With the following link to a guide, you'll be able to tell the game only to use one core of your cpu, so the game runs as it was designed to run. It is resulting in better stability. Skim the guide to the section labeled "Frequent random crashes" and follow the instructions.

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=260437327

You should also look into the PhysX fix mentioned in the above guide. Typically used to resolve issues with startup crashes, it can very well contribute to solving crashes that appear in-game saves.

The LAA Patch for Origins: Origins amount of limited Ram/Memory, due to it being an older title, brings it subject to certain incompatibilities on modern systems. Resulting in strange glitches, crashing, and bugs in the game. With the Patch, you'll be able to enable the game to more amounts of RAM/Memory for better stability. A link to the guide detailing the method of install. I recommend just installing the pre-patched exe to best ensure a stable game:

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=233222451

(If you had done another method of LAA Patch outside of what the guide instructs or if the manual way doesn't work, please install the pre-patched exe instead.)

Run the game in Compatibility mode for Windows XP (Service Pack 3), not 7 or vista. The game has a variety of issues running on modern Windows operating systems, 7 and up. Running the game in Compatibility mode will help ensure better stability, along with the LAA Patch, and the Affinity fix. To run the game in Compatibility mode, go to your games install/binship folder, right click "DAOrigins.exe" or "DAOrigins," and click the option in the pop-up menu "Properties." In the "DAOrigins.exe Properties" window, click the tab labeled "Compatibility," click the box next to "Run this program in compatibility mode for:" and select "Window XP (Service Pack 3)" in the drop-down box under "Run this program in compatibility mode for:"

(Note: If you run the game using a non-steam created a shortcut to the game, especially if doing the automatic affinity fix option, do the compatibility fix on itself. Example of such would be one created by right-clicking the game's exe file, clicking "Send to," and Desktop.)

Quinn's Ultimate Fix Pack: https://www.nexusmods.com/dragonage/mods/4689

This mod above will fix a variety of issues within origins, including strange glitches, and crashing related.

DirectX Installation/Re-installation by going into your games install folder, redist folder, DirectX, and run "DXSetup.exe" as administrator. You can also do it by running them to be downloaded file from here: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=35.

You could try running the game on the Origin Client instead: https://techgage.com/article/migrating_your_ea_games_from_steam_or_retail_to_origin/.

Origin Client: https://www.origin.com/usa/en-us/store/download

The link will send you to a guide to activate your game on the Origin Client for free. It has been said by many that playing the game on this Client instead of Steam is better, and resolve a multitude of problems people face. You can still do all the first fixes I mentioned once done as well. I do highly recommend implementing those fixes onto the game once you do the switch. The fixes do indeed fix problems that tend to show themselves in the long run with the game.

(Note: The Origin Client fix is more of a last resort option if all else fails using the Steam Client.)

If in need of further assistance, let me know, and I will reply as soon as I am able.

I was running into this yesterday, It was one of my mods. Named AI-something, I tried to look it up but already deleted it from my list. So not much help, but confirming what others wrote. It is one of your mods. I am running about 30 pretty bug free, I had to take a few out a long the way, one was a texture pack that was making making my textures whacky. One was the Ai one I deleted and it fixed it all. DAO mods. 99% of the mods are great, so do not let yourself get discouraged. A little trouble shooting will get you going again.

was it because of the 2 gig ram patch?

Might also want to try lowering the graphics settings a bit. I too had a playthrough (no mods) where I had no crashes whatsoever until I got to Denerim. LAA and Affinity and other fixes didn't help much, while lowering the graphics (and to be fair the difference in looks is fairly minor) stopped most of them.
Disabling the Steam overlay might also help.

Might have been something such as V-sync too. I know that causes issues in older titles.
