Sudoku is common, but that doesn't mean EVERYBODY knows about it. And even if you did, try to solve a hard or normal one. Hell, even easy sudoku takes a while to solve for someone who never tried one.
Well, one might not know what to think when they see a random sudoku jump on their face. Also, my previous point. Unlikely, but possible.
Sudoku are hard, unless you are used to completing them. The basic rules and methods are not hard to understand, but noisy environment and stress makes it even more difficult. I can solve easy and normal sudoku puzzles kinda OK, but harder puzzles take a long time for me. Also here, you had strict time limit (in story). And, sudoku is fully faithful to the entire Nonary Game -theme. 9x9 grid with 3x3 sections.
Of course spelling "password" is disgustingly easy, but - if you switch out even a single number before that (which was what I did), simply spelling password won't autosolve the riddle and you won't immediately know what the problem is - to throw you off even more, the letters, as per base 27, also add to the digital root, so using them within the grid seems like something the game could want you to do... Additionally, I wasn't sure pressing "hint" was a smart idea, since I didn't want to get any actual hints ;)
So, if you mess around a little and the first thing you do isn't just spelling "password" - you'll really maneuver yourself into a corner, the numbers get jumbled up quite nicely, and solving it at this point involves a bunch of time-consuming trial and error. So, at least plotwise, Akane getting herself killed by not being able to solve this in a timely manner is totally believable to me.
