-go to the game on the Steam Deck, but instead of clicking 'Play', click on the gear icon/settings button
-Choose Properties in the Settings menu
-go to the Compatibility tab
-check the box next to "Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool"
-in the dropdown that appears, change it from the default 'Proton 7.0-3' to 'Proton 6.3-8"
now VLR should run correctly
I'd been encountering crashes throughout whenever entering a new room and pressing buttons before the first line completed; I had to progress carefully, but as soon as I got out of the Laboratory I saved (avoiding one of the old corruptions) and started using the Memo function. Well, that was enough to crash again after closing the menu.
Unfortunately, somehow that locked me out of continuing from my saves as the Load menu wouldn't open. It wouldn't load for Continue, Delete Data, and even starting from the beginning I could only access that menu ONCE before crashing. Restarting my device and uninstalling did nothing.
Your post here, so far, has saved me! As a bonus, I got the video working, too lol.
[Edit: Added information]
This crashing only occurred with VLR. I had no errors playing 999. (The video cutscenes didn't play for me in 999 either, but that was me not fixing the render settings.)
