Worth It?
Debating on buying this collection over re-buying the DS copy of 999. I played 999 when it first came out, and bought it on a whim. Loved it, and beat it to completion. It's been many years since, and I'm thinking about buying it for the DS to replay it. I already have Virtue's Last Reward on the 3DS, which I've barely played.

I just got the sudden urge to play the trilogy, and I'm wondering if I should stick with the original releases and order the DS version, or experience the first two games via PC. I've seen videos and pictures here and there for 999, and I was turned off. Something about the pixelated visuals of the original just stand out to me more. I also was listening to the OST of 999 in this remastered version, and everything sounded decent (what I listened to anyways), minus Chill and Rigor. It just seemed to be lacking the same impact as the original, which is a huge turnoff.

I know one track shouldn't be a deal breaker, but I love experiencing games the way they were originally intended. I also wasn't thrilled by voice acting, but I assume I can turn that off if needed. I do like the more streamlined way of getting the true ending though. Don't have to play through the whole game again and speed through text just to get where you need to be. Just warp yourself to a point in time with a branching path and go the other way. I do very much like that.

Anyways, what would you guys recommend? I can get the original 999 on DS for $34.99 or buy this dual-pack for $27.99. Getting the DS version is more authentic, but the remastered version is cheaper and more streamlined for easier play. Keep in mind that I do have Virtue's Last Reward on 3DS.

Thank you for you time and assistance to all who respond.

If the loss of what you mentioned is truly a deal breaker for you, I'd say to get the version that you're used to even though it'll be more expensive for you to do so.

Me personally, I didn't have a connection to the original 3DS versions of 999 and VLR so it was a no brainer for me to spring for the dual pack here on Steam.

The voice acting is superb (JP - havn't tried English), and the PC version has both language options for the text, which depending on what your looking for may be a bonus for you. (and most probably won't be in the DS version).

Again this is from someone who hasn't played it on DS, but the PC port seemed to be done with great loving.

I would say that if you don't mind no voice acting (as I don't), and don't mind not being able to use the flowchart that was done for this remaster, I would recommend DS version over this.
Simply because the plot twist doesn't work without dual screens... and even if you don't use the adventure style in this remaster, which I find honestly dumb... it still won't be as good presentation wise for me.
Both versions are great, but if you don't mind the downsides of DS version, it's a better choice.
