Do you play with English or Japanese voice acting?
I was wondering which version most people prefer. Personally I started playing in English but then tried the Japanese version and think it somehow better enhances the game's atmosphere. Not that the English voice actors are necessarily bad but for some reason I can just take the characters more seriously in Japanese.

I hesitated a little before buying because I already know the stories of both games but now I'm really glad I did. It's just great to once again experience the game with its now even better atmosphere.

So which version do you prefer?

Japanese version, although I listened to a bit of the English and I must say that Junpei's voice actor is not bad.
♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ English. It's amazing.

Why isn't the protagonist in VLR voiced?

Because he isn't, quite simply. There's no real reason for it.

Well it is a bit irritating, as I find it is hard to care for any character that isn't voiced. The only thing that makes sense is that the developers wanted it to feel like you are there, as you have to make decisions. I don't like it, but I'll get used to it.

There is sorta a story reason, but it's never brought up. Not gonna mention it now, though. Besides, he's the MC. You're gonna care about him by the end.

One playthrough with English, one playthrough with Japanese, rinse and repeat.

When I started 999 for the first time, I set the dub to the Japanese one, then started playing and didn't really like Junpei's voice, so I switched back to the English voices. Apart from Clover's voice (and perhaps the ninth man's and Ace's sometimes), I thought the dub was good overall and played through the whole game with it. And that's coming from someone with a bad experience with English dubs. I might replay it with the Japanese voices someday, though.

Now I've started VLR with the Japanese dub, so far it sounds pretty good, even though Phi's voice sounds a little too "flat", and I've noticed a few other things (in particular for Tenmyouji's acting). Still, so far so good, and I might try the English dub as well.

I don't see the issue with Clover's voice.

funnily enough, i found the english voice acting in 999 to be pretty decent (although having haruhi in there felt weird), but really disliked the VLR english voice acting.

It's not the voice itself, it's the acting. Sorry about this.
