If there were 10 new games that interested me I would buy them all. I don't know at what point I would be overloaded. Haven't been there yet.
In my mind magazines are a thing of the past. They are something you might pick up and read while waiting for your appointment in the doctor's office. See my question #1 answer.
I still read PC Gamer, but I prefer to listen to podcasts like 3 Moves Ahead and Explorminate for my gaming news, as well as just good old clicking around on the web and in Steam discussions. Hope Eador will live on.
I'm enjoying these discussions about game design :) A lot of how I get awareness of games has to do with Steam, and then there's a local show called ScreenPlay which I watch for gaming news. Also when things get a lot of viewers in Twitch I tend to notice. How I decide to buy a game depends at least a little on how effective the ad is at impressing me. Sometimes I just see something and something about it looks cool, so I impulse buy and later regret it. That doesn't necessarily mean a snazzy ad so much as an ad that showcases something original about the game that I want to see. I probably regret impuluse buys about half the time I make them, but they don't happen very often. Maybe once or twice a year.
Concnerning Eador, I found it through Steam recommendation, then I think I saw the comment that Imperium was happening in the news section of Eador at some point.
1. My gaming friends want to play it with me. That of course requires them to have heard of the game some how.
2. A Let's Play Youtuber does a Let's Play or at the very least a Let's Look At of the game. This is how I first get to know most of the games I like (Eador included, I am pretty sure it was Northernlion that made an Episode about it and I was really intrigued with the game's concept). If I actually end up buying a game it is usually because I saw a YouTuber play it, I liked the game and I couldn't stand how bad the YouTuber was at decision making so I just had to buy the game to perform better myself (that is why I bought X-Com for 50€ ).
The price is of course also a factor. For me, I will not really mind acting on a momentary desire to play a game if it costs less than 25€, anything above that makes it far more likely for me to instead be patient and wait for a sale, and by the time that comes around, I might not want to play the game anymore so I might not buy it, even if it is a good deal.
