What I did was connect 4 batteries instead of 3 and it worked. The gate was already open, by the way, and I tried several times with first three batteries (including statue one). Not sure which one of the three is "extra" (maybe statue battery is not required?) but it worked for me with 4 batteries.
TL;DR:
if 3 batteries don't work, try 4.
