Museum - Opening the Vault?

I'm at a section where there's huge vault door, a few boxes of different sizes, a cuboid (?) on a shelf, and a detonator (which doesn't seem to work) leading down to a hole with a dynamite and another detonator that doesn't even go down when I try to push it.

I've been here for almost 30 minutes, so I'd appreciate a hint on what I should do... thing is, with this game's history with levels added later, I wouldn't be surprised if I can't move forward due to a bug.

Did I just detonate the vault door even though the detonator cords goes down the hole and not in the direction of the actual dynamite...?

Yeah, this section is dumb and illogical. I had a problem with this too
