Controller not working

I'm using the steam controller on MacOS. I've tried multiple controller templates and with generic gamepad, xbox and ps4 controller emulation enabled. When the game starts and it says "press any key to start" I can use the controller buttons and it goes to the main menu, but after that it's completely unresponsive. The controller works perfectly fine in other games.

last time i played i used my xbox pad and worked fine . never used a steam controler. with pc id all ways go xbox pad it works for me compat with pc cos microsoft in my eyes is the best controler for a pc
