Let me start with: I wouldn't play this game without turning the mouse sensitivity all the way up and the mouse smoothing all the way down. I highly recommend it if you're having trouble with moving up/down fast enough. This game isn't about being an elite sniper! Go crazy on the mouse sensitivity.
For me, that still feels really low in the sensitivity ballpark, but I like high mouse sensitivity. That being said, if you're not extremely comfortable with holding down both mouse buttons for an extended period of time, it will likely cause unpleasant fatigue. The developer did a great job with the controls. One button for each arm and then just move around. It's extremely simple yet fantastic. That's one of the main ingredients in this magical game. This is not without faults though.
Ok, now I'm going to change perspective. I'm turning 31 this month. I started playing games with a mouse when I was 6 playing Doom (around '93). I grew up using a mouse, doing wrist exercises, and spending a lot of my time trying to keep my arms/shoulders loose from all the computer time, as I work in IT for a living now too. This game has exhausted my wrist with holding down both mouse buttons. If you're a more casual gamer at 55? It's probably a lot worse. It's so much fun, but the arm/wrist/hand isn't well built for this type of motion for a long period of time.
If the mouse sensitivity or using a controller doesn't help? Maybe it's time to try to play around with keybinds that your wrists are ok with. For instance: Let your mouse hand be your mouse hand, and then maybe try to bind left hand to CTRL and right hand to ALT. That would at least still let you move around with your three main fingers on the left hand. (I haven't tried this type of layout, just trying to suggest different things.)
Anyways, the game's controls aren't horrible. The human body is horrible at doing what we love, which it wasn't designed to do. Best of luck.
Edit: A good friend who's about to turn 50 has told me that she and her husband have had to move towards trackballs. They're the ones you control with your fingers (not your thumb) with the buttons on the sides. Maybe that could be an alternate option too.
pull up is easy, jump-grab-pull up is easy.
Side ways? Works, if you only wants to go down.
climb up? works good if you want to go down!
Cant get the arms ever to lift high again after letting one go, and then to actually make it grab hold again is a one in a million shot.
The thing is I actually LOVE the controls. When I tested it out I was jumping around the training area in Mountain loving it and figuring out how things work. That tutorial vid about getting high and yoga makes me chuckle too.
you look up and hold both mouse buttons to reach up.
you jump to grab the ledge.
you look down to lift yourself up.
you release mouse buttons.
its pretty easy. you dont need to strain your wrists. maybe you need to change the sensitivity in your controls in the options.
You really never have to climb completely flat surfaces nor does that make sense. There is "free" climbing and I agree it is hard, and I usually only do it when I miss a ledge by a few inches, but it CAN be done. If you're at the point that the swinging type climbing specifically is making you rage, you should be looking for another path forward. Or I am missunderstanding something greater.
