Rome: Total War

Rome: Total War

I Cannot Play as Nations I Defeat.
So, I recently started a new campain for the Julii, going great, built up a ton of momentum on the Gaulic front and pretty much Blitzkreig'd them. But the whole reason I even started the campain is because I wanted to play as Spain, and to play as Spain I needed to defeat them in a war. So, I reach the Spanish borders, war last for way longer than expected, I win. I defeat every settlement they have. No one helped in this war, just me. Took the last settlement, saved, back to main menu and Spain isn't there. I went back into the save, continued for about 20 turns, still wasn't there. Closed the game, booted it up again, still not there. Is there something I can do about this? Maybe I ♥♥♥♥♥♥ it up? I mean, I don't think I did. I took every settlement by myself. A few Spanish rebel armies popped up, which only served to slow me down. I'm kinda' at a loss at what to do. If I start again and conquer them again will it do the same thing? Help?

You cant play as Spain normaly, in order to play as Spain you need to change the descr_strat. That means that you can't unlock Spain normaly. Some other factions that you won't unlock them by defeating them are: SPQR, Macedon, Numidia, Spain, and Thrace if I remember right. If you don't know how to change the descr_strat there are plenty videos on YouTube that show you how to do it step by step. Here is a video that will probably solve your problem.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aXhEjP6q94E good luck. :D

Spain is not a unlockable nation. You have to open it via changing game files.

Yep and this REALLY isn't cheating. They honestly pain stakingly created all these factions that are playable and work and then just for no reason at all locked half of them. It's completely retarded and who ever made the decision has lost them so much money as a result.

actually some factions are slightly defunctional, take the scythians for example, they can build all levels of stables but only get 2 types of cavalry

Some factions are literally meant as filler, fun to kill as a chnage of pace but they are a buffer zone to real enemies.

The Spanish are basically just like the Gauls, Britions and Germanics. No change of pace just the same thing again and again. It's why the Julii is the worst family of Rome to play as.

Julii is worst among the Romans(however they conquered Rome) because of the low income, have to take over the Europe(veerrrry big place), barbarians(tbh hardest nations to destroy after Romans in RTW in my opinion) not enough ports to make sea trade for huge income in the early and mid game. But in the late game, they become unstoppable(y'know, after conquering Britannia and Spain they getting a LOT of ports for sea trade.)

In vanilla the Spanish are also very similar to the Carthaginians. They share the same basic infantry as well as the same light and 'medium' cavalry. Spain have barbarian influences though quite rightly as you said.

This is why a good Julii player would know that in order to prosper in Rome, they will have to conquer Carthage, Macedonia, and the Greeks first, before wiping out the Barbarians.

However, one advantage the Julii family has is that it can rapidly create armies due to the unique stratigical placement of it's cities. By conquering Mediolanium and Patavium, a Julii player can train a 20-unit strong army (through training 4-5 units each in Arretium, Ariminum, Mediolanium, and Patavium) in a mere 5 turns, and combine them all by the river by the 6th turn. Combine this with a growing list of Male Family Members who come to age, and the Julii can spam general-led armies like no tommorow (assuming they can afford them).

Going for Macedonia and Greece early can be good because Bruti are usually doing the same (or at least making a half-assed attempt to) which takes some of the heat off you. I've never seen them move north west into barbarian lands so you basically just get that for free later.
Am I the only Julii scrub who whips the Gauls (hastati hastati hastati hastiati), slaughters the Britons (archers archers archers archers), and then stomps Germania (more HASTATIIIIIIIIIIIIII) while whacking Dacia and Spain?

It's usually what I do but I notice if you play on very hard, despite how they're doing overseas Greece will always land boatloads of Onagars and Spartan Hoplites on the upper east coast of Italy :( means I have to keep half my forces at home and makes the barbarian conquest that much slower.

the Germans are quite different from the Gauls and Britons plus the Britons have chariots so yes there is quite a change in pace.

just recruit a bunch of peasants and place them on all coastal tiles, now no one can land.
peasants are the best unit.

I've actually tried that before. There's a channel they had to come up to land which I blocked off with a fleet of 5 ships with a ship in each tile of water so nothing could get through, they somehow still phase through :/

Edit: The sea part is in addition to the land based suggestion. Didn't specify sorry.
