I personally enjoyed some of the expanded mechanics of Medieval 2, such as the religion system, increased scripting support, the different yet similar faction types, holy wars, changing unit graphics when armor is increased, and much more.
Though, I am a little peeved the pikemen of Med2 aren't as useful and usable as the hoplites and pikemen of Rome, and I do admit the battle UI is a little awkward to understand (that's why I placed the battle UI at minimal instead of the regular option).
On the other hand, Rome has the ability for all units to have gold weapons, armor, and chevrons; wardogs, pigs, and armored elephants; roman legionaries (med II has no such units unless they're modded in); the ability to set the faction heir; working pikemen; chariots (even if they are fragile); and a barbaric world in need of conquest and enslavement (no pope breathing down your back with the message to stop killing fellow civilized catholics...).
However, Rome lacks incredibly useful mechanics introduced in Med 2, such as the free-militia-upkeep system, the diplomacy mechanic that tells how the AI feels about the current deal offer (very demanding-very generous), and actually being able to hold onto allies and vassals (unlike factions in Rome, who are all very backstabbing-happy....)
All I remember was swatting annoying flies left and right until I discovered I was the undisputed ruler of the world somehow.
Which is then the BEST
til you get a hankering to play EB 1...
Both games have their own specific niches of greatness, which is part of what makes them both such individually awesome games.
Substance over style, unlike Rome 2 and, sadly, prolly any Med 3 that CA might one day release.
Everyone and their mother and grand-mother wanted me dead.
So I swatted them all with a fly-swatter; silver fly-swatters, mind you.
