[SPOILER] How to deal with Ranek ratting out?

If you obtain the absentee certificate from Ranek he rat you out as soon as he moves out and a $3000 fine hit you in the face. He cannot be framed as he is somehow protected by the state and immune to reports.

So is there anyway to avoid taking the $3000 fine given that he is the only way the absentee certificate can be obtained? Has anyone figured out an alternative?

There is no other way to get absentee certificate, unfortunately. Each choice brings consequences...

Fair enough. I will just suck it up for the greater good...pretty sure Mr and Mrs Ranek would agree upon a generous donation to cover the expense after soda was found in their wardrobe...

Did you get the absentee certificate from Ranek? He can't backstab you if you didn't ask him to help.

Maybe it has something to do with honesty? I read somewhere about Ranek doesn't like people who lies. I chose "vague reply" in the profile schimmer quest and "tell the truth" in the certificate quest not sure if those choices has any impact on the backstab or not.

Did you choose to tell the truth in both dialogue?

If you tell the truth he'll ask you some whisky for his help instead of money (and as doctor give one for free, this way is better). He'll still make you pay 3000 fine.
Well, I just made him and his wife pay 20000 blackmail money and we were even :3

I theorycrafted a little bit more and I think maybe the trick is to use your rep points to force him to do it instead of bribing him with whiskey or money. Coz the fine was about "trying to bribe". Haven't tested it tho but I think that might be the solution.
