Are Bow builds viable?
That is one build I have not tried. Also what 2 masteries go good with a bow build?

Yup, I have a few different ones and one them is one of my top-tier builds that can do everything easily and even EE like it was normal.

Haruspex ( Hunting / Dream).

Curious, why a bow over throwing?

good question! Except for bow having longer range, its attack speed is much slower and requires of both hands. Since anniversary version, bow has been nerfed by so much it is hardly justifiable.

But if your original question was is it viable, then definitely yes and fun to play.
Bows are perfectly viable. Generally for masteries you'd go Hunting for Markmanship if you're doing a physical / pierce build or Rune for an elemental damage build. Should be able to combo both of those with most other masteries.

For Hunting, Haruspex (+Dream) is a very solid all around option. Brigand (+Rogue) should be a high DPS glass cannon type build. For Rune, you can combo with other caster masteries. You can also make non Rune elemental builds if you get gear with elemental conversion.

As for bows vs throwing weapons, throwing weapons are the superior options overall. Throwing weapons can be dual wielded or comboed with shields and have faster attack speed but smaller range. Bows have superior range but slower attack speed. You just need to kill everything before it can reach you or use CC or protective skills.

I remember having a Nature+Hunting character at some point. Sort of a typical Ranger, bow+wolves.
But the best part about it was the "Refresh" spell, which allowed me to have the "Call of the hunt" buff active 100% of the time.

Now I'm curious about the Rune elemental build. Do you just increase dex and get elemental damage from the conversion ?
(Not quite sure how this works. Does piercing damage gets converted into elemental at all?)

no. Piercing damage that is converted into elemental will only be enhanced by Int, not related to Dex anymore. Therefore Rune build typically are Int based.

Pierce damage does not get converted into Elemental. Base damage converted to Elemental only accounts the Physical damage for conversion.

I'll just be more specific. Let's say your weapon base damage is 100, you have 40% weapon physical damage becomes elemental, and 25% pierce ratio.
Elemental conversion goes first. 40 out of 100 damage is now elemental. It's treated as normal elemental damage, ie actually it consists of 1/3 of fire, cold and lightning damage and only increased by int, not str or dex.
Pierce ratio goes second. Out of remaining 60 damage, 25% would become pierce damage, which is 60*25%=15. And the remaining 60*(1-25%)=45 is physical.
