Iron Lore was the developer, THQ (old) was the publisher of the DVD/CD version. THQ Nordic (new) graciously gave the Anniversary Edition to everyone who already owned a digital copy of the game on Steam and GoG.
Retail versions have always been separate from the digital edition. There are some retail versions whose CD key you can redeem on Steam, but if this doesn't work, you will need to buy it on Steam.
THQ Nordic purchased the franchise and trademarks when THQ (old) went bankrupt. This means that THQ Nordic never got a cent of the money we spent on the retail version OR the previous Steam versions, so what they are doing is very nice. They gave the Anniversary Edition to everyone whom they could verify owned the game, and for everyone else they put in a 75% discount for a week. Both is generous.
However, we have no control as far as all the different retail versions are concerned BEFORE that time. We had internal discussions on what to do with the retail versions which are not Steam bound and came to the conclusion that there is not an easy fix for this. Hence we opted for a -75% release week discount on Steam, GOG and all the other platforms, so that “old” retail versions at least get it for basically nothing (i.e. EUR/USD 4.99).
Some users here (like Mivo and Machine Heart) already added some extra points which we said in several posts.
That will teach you not to buy physical products these days.
I am pretty sure i got this for 5$usd many yrs ago on a steam sale.
I would NEVER pay more then 5$ for a game i already had as a retail copy.
each to their own.........................
The way I figure it, the money I put in for the game is going to Titan Quest 2, Darksiders 3 or even a new Red Faction (please, lets pretend Armageddon never happened).
Good point. Additionally, I feel that the initiative and generosity THQ Nordic have shown should be rewarded, because these are really good moves that put THQ Nordic above and beyond many other publishers. I had TQ on Steam already, so received the Anniversary Edition for free, but my partner bought herself a copy (so we can play together) and I bought a copy for a friend's birthday. May get another or two for the inventory, for future gifting.
