I was informed before 0.9.4 released that SteamVR isn't stable on Linux, I don't currently have a Linux distro installed so I can't test myself at the moment.

I havn't added a VR launch option for Linux yet because of this but if you want to try, launch the game with the -vr argument. It should theoretically work.

I'd go further, BallisticNG doesn't even show up in my library on my Linux distro (Elementary-OS) while on the Show All Games tab, not just the Linux filter. This seems to be the only game that have this issue.

Edit: Once the game is installed there are no problems, the game is showing in the library.

I tried it today and it does work. It crashed in the menus a couple of times but not during races.

I got my vive yesterday and just gave it a quick try. apart from my missconfigured 360 joypad (my fault of course :)) the game works great for me in VR mode (didn't play very long though).
thank you for linux support! :)

Good to hear that VR is atleast somewhat working on linux! If I owned a VR headset the game would probably be set as VR compatible on linux since I'd be able to troubleshoot any VR issues, but until then it won't be listed as linux VR capable.
If there are any weird SteamVR issues some of them might be fixed in the 1.0 update since the linux builds will be using an updated version of Unity.

As a workaround VR works in linux with the help of proton. Enable the use of specific compatibility tool for ballisticng and then launch the game. Proton translates the win version directx calls to vulkan and it works.

It crashes for me on linux when I start it with -vr right after the intro.
Works fine with proton, however the input from my thrustmaster stick-x is not correctly dedected.
Any know workarounds?
(BTW thanks for offering the linux build)

Shame vr isn't working on the native version for you. Might want to try something like xboxdrv and setup your controller as a xbox 360 gamepad. Steam big picture mode also has options for configuring and rebinding controllers for games, I think that should apply to proton as well.

I am also getting a crash on the native build launching it with -vr

Is there a log I could send to fault find?
Aidan  [producent] 16 stycznia 2020 o 13:28
There should be a Player.log file in ~/.config/unity3d/Vonsnake/BallisticNG. Can't promise anything if the cause of the crash isn't obvious in the log though since I don't have a VR headset to test with.

I know it's been awhile since this thread was active, but here's a Player.log if you're still interested in taking a look.

Thanks for sending that, had a look through and unfortunately nothing seems out of the ordinary. Until we have some idea of what's crashing (or I buy my own headset) I'm not sure there's too much I can do to help.

Starting "./BallisticNG -vrmode openvr" works for me and I can start a race.

The ingame camera isn't attached to the racing car at all though. It starts on a random spot on the map and the arrow keys rotate the camera in a large radius around the entire map.

Vega 64, latest radeonsi.

With -force-vulkan it immediately crashes though. Would be nice to have vulkan support enabled.

if you're able to get into a race your player.log might contain useful information. I've seen similar "camera of a random spot" before and its usually when something throws an error during race startup.
The vulkan renderer is deliberately disabled as most user generated content won't work with it as shaders aren't exported with spir-v code (all mod authors would need to re-upload their workshop items if we updated the formats for support vulkan). This is the same reason why the metal renderer isn't enabled to OSX either.

Fair enough about the OpenGL requirement. Performance is okay anyway.

I see a lot of these lines in my log:
(Filename: Line: 4174) Cannot set field of view on camera with name 'Scene Camera(Clone)' while VR is enabled.

log with many of those messages trimmed out from the middle: https://ghostbin.co/paste/5jc2p
