How do I play Rec Room with my friend instead of just random people?

A few of my coworkers installed Rec Room and we want to do some sort of multiplayer co op or whatever. How do we play in the same session together? Is there a special lobby where we invite our friends on Steam?

You can import your friends from Steam through the computer in your Dorm Room if you haven't already done so in the tutorial or through the message on your watch. You can create a private instance (where only you can invite other people) of almost any activity or room in Rec Room by going into the Activities button on your Watch Menu, and selecting the "Private activity" toggle at the bottom of the screen and then going to the desired Activity.

New player here - neither of these seem to be possible anymore - or at least not by these instructions. Is there still a way to have private instances of events or rooms with just invited friends?

Yes! The layout of things has changed quite a bit since this post, but this is still a feature.

To start a private instance of a room, press the little "i" button next to a room's name in the Play menu. That will open the room's information page, where there is a "Go To Private" button in the bottom right. You can then invite your friends from the People tab of your watch. (Or, if you're already partied-up with your friends - give them a fist bump to do that - you'll be prompted to invite them when you start the private room.)
