Where is the Byzantine Flag from?

It looks like the flag of the actual Byzantine/Roman Empire, but with the red switched for purple and the yellow switched for white. Was this an actual flag they used that I just can't find online, or did the devs just switch them around to fit the units colour scheme better?

I don't think the romans ever used purple in their flag, purple is an extremely expensive color and to outfit all your flags with purple would be crazy. i don't think it's a historical flag but england already has red and yellow, so they would be the same color

yeah i think its the flag from like CK2 or EU4 and they just threw some purple on it instead of red

Even though CK2 and EU4 were released after Medieval 2

The Byzantines have been purple since Medieval 1, so at latest 2001. I think they just used the colors to make them stand out, and that purple was known to be associated with them because they were wealthy enough to have the dyes for it.

Well it wouldn't be every flag of course, but I thought that there was a slight chance that it might have been some sort of special flag brought out for special occassions or something like that. Avoiding another red/yellow faction makes more sense though.
