the problem with HRE in vanilla is that its best units are weakened by the two-handed bug present in vanilla

HRE's best infantry are just cancer in vanila. Then made worse in the DLC, with weaker stats, but their problems fixed.

Trash start infantry, too big of a nation with low tax rate, and low standards with the pope. HRE is good for players who want a challenge. But if you want a challenge play Byzantium than.

If you turtle up maybe. It's risky, but you can double your territory within 5-10 ish turns and from that point you pretty much just roll over Europe. Other than maybe Milan or France, I can't think of an easier faction in this game.
