Locked camera is standard in good strategy games. Nobody needs that, jus as nobody needs female vikings. Distractions from true gameplay. Also adds clunkiness for older systems.
There are many features that 'nobody needs', but if everything gets sacrificed you'll end up with a lower quality game, no matter how good the gameplay is. Why bother with animations? No one needs them, they're just eye candy. I know how we can solve clunkiness too, let's limit the game to 1366 x 768, no one needs more than that as long as you can see everything you need to see. Actually let's not do that, how about we take out shadows and use a 16 bit colour scheme, that'll be more efficient.
Some people (like myself) just prefer having more choices when it comes to surveying the map. Personally I prefer being able to show the important area (such as an enemy I'm keeping an eye on, or the direction I'm heading in) towards the top of the screen as you have a wider view, rather than when you're travelling south of the display.
