Is noob hatred normal in this game?
I've been mocked and had teammates abandon on me for being a Wood / Villager player, and occasionally making rookie mistakes (like feasting during winter). Is this normal in Northgard? Should I find a different game to learn multiplayer RTS's in?

Not compared to games like dota and league. You could try to find another game but you'll get exactly the same issue.

Instead I suggest playing FFA. Then playing team games after you know what you're doing.

lol same here except i dont mind because thats one of toxic ways you learn. was being yelled at when i feasted during winter and when im mining during feast. asked why. got good reasons not to do them.

IMO, yes its normal. I dont do team anymore and started doing FFA from on now and got to iron because of it. Teams are rigged anyways. Too many cheating premades.

Also about feasting during winter, the difference between doing it in winter and summer is resources. In summer, you get more resources off feasts compared to winter. Only reason I could do feast is if I'm full food or something but I would usually buy lands if my food is getting full.

There are several situations and reasons to feast in winter, don't listen to the try-hards...!

Cheating as in actual cheats or cheating as in because the players already know each other/have a strategy? Haven't tried public multiplayer, just play with friends so would be nice to know.

Not disclosing that you are premade is usually frowned upon, and it's certainly cheating in 1s FFAs. If you put "premade" in the title of your match then you shouldn't have any issues.

Go for sc2. Its free and 2v2/3v3 modes generally less toxic than this game.
