"build" for a first time player?
Never fully progressed through the game over the years, what would be good starting attributes to put into without spoiling too much or a suggested stat spread?

Just remember that Wisdom is very important in this game.
It's a role-playing game. Tell us what type of person you'd like to play as, and we can give you some pointers.

I just remember adding all to Wisdom or whatever to not miss out on dialogue? Or is that like a powergaming esque thing that I'll possibly miss out on other things or paths.

Wisdom opens up tons of new dialogue options yes, and affects XP gain. But it's straightforward; if you want to play as a wise character, invest in Wisdom.

18 wis, 17 int, and 13 cha is the ideal setup for a mage.

Anyone know of a mage level stat distribution guide from beginning to end?

My honest advice is this. Do whatever you want to to do! Be creative. Don't read or listen to what others tell you to do or how to build a character. If you miss things in your first playthrough (and like any good CRPG, you will miss things, trust me), that is something you can find in a future playthrough. Any build is good if you figure out how to make it work by using your brain in an RPG. I don't think I've made one build yet that made an RPG unwinnable, so I say just have fun and do your own thing. As long as you have a basic semblance of what the stats do (read the in-game descriptions at character creation, they help) you will be good to go. :)

This.
Specially if you only plan on playing the game once. Try to see as much content as you can.

If you have time, play as many times as you want.
