Is There an Ideal Level at Which to Change Classes
First time playing PT, EE or otherwise.

Early I've decided to change my Nameless One to a Mage. I am currently ready to upgrade as I've done all the quests for You Know Who that trains a mage. But I had a thought. I don't know if this game exp caps or not.

So which level is ideal to change from default fighter into mage?

I'm currently level 5, but I have enough experience to go up a level immediately. Alternatively, I've found I can upgrade straight to mage level 3 after training with You Know Who.

You start as a level 1 fighter. You can then train to be a thief or mage after which you'll start out as level 1 in either of those. You have to be a fighter to gain weapon proficiency. You have to be a mage to cast spells. You have to be a thief to use thief abilities. Each class levels up individually but only when you are playing as that class. There are also specialization bonuses at levels 7 and 12. These are awarded depending on which class reaches those levels first.

For a mage 7 and 12 is very important to get the end game top tier spells.

I hear some folks level like a couple few levels if fighter for weapons prof and health. Then switch to mage, level up past the fighter level to get new skill points and once mage is level 7 you get a special 1 time bonus and once again at 12 you also get a 1 time bonus. If you mix the classes on those 2, you will miss out at the lvl 12 bonus being better(just get a smaller one) if its same as level 7.

IMO, the best time to switch over to mage is ASAP, since I don't care about the minor gains from taking extra fighter levels.

There are multiple ways to power-game or min/max things, though. On these forums I once saw someone who considered the fighter bonuses to be so overpowered that his ideal strategy for mage run was power level to 12 as a fighter by killing black abishai over and over and over again (I did the math, and it would take at least 2 hours of grinding to do that), and then switching over to mage to actually play the game.

If you want the most HP, but still want your class specializations as Mage, level up to 6 as fighter, then change classes.

Thanks. Level 6 fighter it is, then mage.

yep good idea as a mage. you'll want levels 7-12 as a mage for the mage specializations but first 6 levels as fighter for the initial health.

If you want to go warrior, thieves make better warriors than warriors in the game. Mage level 12 lets you use the wish scroll later which is nice.

Go fighter 12 for the levels 7/12 specializations into fist/punch daggers and higher health. you'll want mage 12 to use wish scroll later. Rest all into thieves, which will have high health, 5 specialization in weapons fist/punchdaggers, all thief skills, and combat ability of the best fighters.

The game sucks with fighters since normal dnd rules that benefit fighters (tough armor, big weapons, high strength damage) don't exist in this game. Thieves are just as good as fighters, and level up much faster thus pumping more points into stats.

In torment, there are really only thieves to play, or mages.
