Can companions equip new weapons?

I know how to pull up the companion inventory and drag and drop weapons into their bag. However every weapon, including the same types as their default, have red backgrounds and are unquipable. (e.g. It won't let me equip fist weapons for Annah even though her default weapon is also a fist weapon) I've checked it out in a merchant window from their perspective and they can't equip any other type either. I can't tell if this is a bug or if I'm just missing something.

Here's what I'm talking about:

Annah can equip punch daggers, morte can equip teeths, dakkon ignus fall from grace can not equip anyweapon i guees, nordom can equip bolts, vhalior can equip axes

Ah, so their weapon types are all just really specific. Thanks, that's been bugging me for a while.

I like Ingress' Teeth which you can give to morte, you get them fairly early on in the game, set them to crushing damage. they help to make morte a lot better, and will level once you get morte to certain levels, then you need to interact with them, so they get better.

as for Annah, you can only give her punch daggers, while it may seem you can equip her with any weapon that has thief in the item descrition, this isn't so. (I wonder if the devs should change that in some weapon's descriptions? as there are a few thief weapons that only TNO can use, but Annah can't, even though those weapons have thief in the class that can equip them?

So watch out of those.

Don't equip Vhailor with a cursed axe unless you plan on having him use it forever cause you won't be able to take it off. Even if you cast a remove curse spell on him it'll just target his default weapon cause that thing also has the cursed attribute and thus a remove curse spell will attempt to remove that weapon, which being that it is his default, is impossible.

Those teeth are hands down the best weapon he can get.
