The writing (and the game) is actually garbage...
As well as most other aspects in this game.... I always believed those who praised this as the holy grail of cRPGs with the best writing and stuff but it seems to be nothing but a myth.

The general idea was that this was a great novel with cheap D&D gameplay tacked on and I was ready to accept that since I care more about story than gameplay. After playing it I came to realize that not only the writing wasn't that good but it was also pretty weak. This has to be the second worst writing I have ever seen in a cRPG with Pillars of Eternity holding the #1 spot.

Not only the writing has a poor form but the rest of the game is also full of shortcomings and this is not even considering the combat which I wont even discuss.

Party members are usually well introduced but after a while I always end up asking the same question, in Quagmire's voice "Why (the f) are you still here?" They end up sticking with you and risking their lives for absolutely no reason. Many of them make the game feels like a parody of Chrono Trigger, like the robot and the prostitute (why the hell did we ask her to join?)

The introduction is great but the story goes in a steep decline shortly after when you realize that the story doesn't progress at all until the end of the game, sorta like Baldur's Gate but without the great combat system and open world exploration to make up for the dullness. The end game revelations that answer all questions are also far from satisfying and feel hamfisted.

The story is also full of nonsense like the protagonist ripping off various parts of his body to replace with rotten parts that magically stick to the wound, while not knowing that it would work.

Speaking of open world exploration, there is none. The game is designed with isolated ballpark areas that you fast travel to like in Baldur's Gate 2. You can easily clear all the content of any area by exploring it alone, most quests are contained within the same ballpark area and don't touch other areas.

I could go on and on about everything that is wrong with this game but i'll stop here for now.

Before rabid fanboys start yapping here is my top 5 list of cRPGs

1- Fallout 1
2- Baldur's Gate 1
3- Ultima 7
4- Daggerfall
5- Avernum 1

Well for starters, consider PST's legendary status from the late 90s perspective. You're 20 years late to the party and are criticizing the game as if it was released yesterday.
There was nothing like it back then. That's why it was mind blowing.

Second, it's a cult classic so please show some respect. Every classic has its reasons for being considered such. Read PST's game reviews from 90s to understand what captivated people back then. You don't judge classics from a modern point of view and kick them out of their "Hall of Fame". Should we rethink every history and sport hero and strip them of their statuses because you might not like them or haven't been around to watch them do their magic?

For starters I am judging the game not based on any specific timeframe but rather by comparing it to even OLDER (and better) cRPGs.

If the game was new I wouldn't be as harsh on it because even if it's bad it remains leagues ahead of the modern crap that gets slapped an RPG tag on.

It being a cult classic is nothing but a myth created by uneducated fanboys/nerds who thought the writing was good. The main point of praise for PST is the writing and anyone who is into reading should be able to recognize that the writing is objectively weak and flawed.

Every single aspect of PST has been done better by another older RPG. Ultima VII, BG and Fallout 1 are better examples of a cult classics because they actually brought innovation to the genre.

I can guarantee that the majority of those who enjoyed PST either didn't read a lot of books and/or haven't seen other RPGs before that.

Well... How to say ?... Ah, yes : LoL !!

Nice troll, bro'

You know why the writing in PoE is trash? It's because it tries to be like PST. Ironic, no?

What the hell do you have against nerds? Just look at your top 5 RPG list, you're one of us. Or you have problems with accepting your identity? Nerds are one of the most interesting people you'll ever meet in your life because they're not your dull average.
And why do you call me uneducated - I studied philosophy and theology for 4 years in university.
Are you reality's authority on education?

Yeah "objectively flawed" from your subjective opinion.
Please, make a game with better story and show us all how it's done.

Why are you comparing a video game with books? No one called it the next Crime and Punishment.

Keyword was "uneducated" and not "nerd".

If you've been to university you should be able to tell that the writing is flawed. English is not even my first language and I could tell that the writing was poor.

I'm comparing the writing with books because they are the standard for what is good writing.

I acknowledge the writing wasn't genius but I like the story and ideas as they were. It's not perfect but it "vibes" with me. Planescape setting is fun, Torment made it even better. Having a conflict with a physical manifestation of your own mortality , how often do you see that .. without having to resort to the use of LSD?

But... Don't bother aswering him : he's obviously a nerd that doesn't accept it for himself, who came here just to post another "I'm the guy that think different !" topic...
