Which spells are a must?
Just switched to mage and had enough money to buy out all Old Mebeths level 1 and 2 spells. Which spells are a must?

There are a number of different play styles that will work, and a lot of the spells have situational uses (like Horror being very handy, but not essential, for a specific quest). That said, my favorite spells are:

Lv1: Reign of Anger / Magic Missile, Scripture of Steel, Friends (situationally), Chromatic Orb (at certain levels), and Missile of Patience (at high levels and when you know how it works).

Lv2: Power of One

Lv3: Ball Lighning, Elysium's Tears, Axe of Torment (each of these has a use, and I waffle on which I think is the most versatile.)

Lv4: Force Missile

Lv5: Cloudkill, Cone of Cold

Lv6: Chain Lightning Storm

Lv7: Bladestorm

Lv8: Meteor Storm Bombardment, Mechanus' Cannon

Lv9: it doesn't matter because you'll likely be casting these mostly to see the animation. They're good, you just may not ever get to have spells slots for them.

I have been testing my spells on the criminals and the black abashai.

Level 1:
Surrender the will x 2 which boosts AC seems good. Chromatic orb x 2
And then Pacify x 2 which works on the thugs but not on the abashai.

Level 2:
Horror and swarm x2

Horror and pacify didnt work on the abashai but worked on the thugs

I'm not a fan of Submerge the Will because Litany of Curses is so good and Morte is already pretty tanky. Better to boost DPS on other characters to end the battle faster.

Litany of Curses is also why I don't generally think very highly of Pacify and Horror.

Submerge the will lasts for a really long time and i also use scripture of steel but not as many charges
Im not far enough in the game but im gonna assume i need to deal with groups of enemies and Litany only affects one at a time. Horror and pacify should deal with groups?

Yeah, Litany is single target, but you can use it as many times as you like.

I assume you have beaten the game?
Do level one/two spells that debuff enemies like horror and pacify still work later in the game? Or is it best to focus on party buffs?

I don't use Horror and Pacify, so I can't say for certain, but Pacify is probably going to stop working completely (since it's based on hit dice), and Horror will fail more often as higher level targets make saving throws successfully. There's no harm in using them in the mean time if it's working for you.
