Fighter and Rogue are both perfectly fine options for playing the game.
As others have mentioned already this game is all about interacting with people to get what you need and advance the plots.
You need high wis,int and cha so you might as well make a mage if you really want the strongest nameless one you can possibly get.
It doesn't matter in the long run because you're immortal in this game.
Fail a fight and return for revenge.
I strongly disagree with this. All three classes are equally viable. If the OP doesn't like playing as a mage, he should definitely play as his preferred rogue class. It will work just fine.
You can defeat the first level by killing all of the dustmen, but I don't personally like that route. If you have 15 dex (I think it's 15) you can snap ones neck and steal his clothes. (you can also get a disguise from the fake zombie, but the slow speed and potential to lose your disguise means I don't like that route either.)
Other than that, where you put the other stat points really depends on what kind of class you want to be.
Wisdom is essential, really. You can miss out on a lot of dialogue options, plus, a high wisdom grants a significant XP bonus. Towards the endgame I already had strength and wisdom around 22 so I started adding points to constitution.
In order not to miss out on most dialogues wisdom is sufficient. I might do another walkthrough with a mage (so wisdom+intelligence+charisma) to see some of the things I missed out.
