Note: This quest must be completed before entering the Lower Ward area, otherwise it will fail.
I wasn't planning on reading too much of the wiki, but that entry made me kinda worried i could miss quests if i didn't do a bit of research first.
(although i guess thats what a 2nd playthrough is for, lol)
That said, Ragpicker's Square is part of the Hive, and it's a long journey from there to the Lower Ward. You're not likely to accidentally travel that far before doing whatever you choose with the quest involving Mar. Or any of the quests in the Hive, for that matter.
The most likely way you'll "miss" a quest will be angering an individual or group and having their hostility keep you from engaging in dialogue. Some groups are really easy to anger, and others you have to really work to end up in combat with, but I'd say it's one of the most frequent reasons people post with "I can't finish this quest!" So save often.
That's not even counting mutually exclusive quests. You simply can't have every possible outcome in a single play-through of the game.
