What does it mean if an item's icon has a blue background?
Exploring the crypts, I found a claw, a hammer, and a severed arm club that all have a blue aura behind their icons. Does anyone know the significance of this?

It means that the item is unidentified. Items can be identified by taking them to a merchant and paying for the identification or with an Identify spell. With a high enough lore skill a character might also be able to identify an item by simply right-clicking on it.

Ohh that makes so much sense. Thanks! Now I have a use for that Infinite Recall charm. I'm glad I hung on to all those blue items instead of selling them

There a option also to identify items without any spell or item, if a character has enough Lore. Like your companion Fall from Grace.

How do you improve your Lore skill? Other than using a Charm of Infinite Recall, of course. I've never seen an option to allocate skill points to Lore or anything like that.

Lore goes up with level, automatically, but I'm not sure of the rules for how much. I think mages get a bonus, and it's possible a high wisdom or intelligence score helps, but I don't know. I cannot find charts for it, and I'm not even sure there is a Lore stat in D&D outside of the Infinity Engine games.
