How do I cheat?
Yes, yes, "get good", whatever. I'm in the Fortress of Regrets, and you know how everyone is all "Planescape Torment is a game where you don't have to do combat, lurrrr lurrr lurrr", and obviously that's wrong because I'm being overwhelmed by shadows everywhere, and since I'm playing a mage and I can't rest--unlike, say, Baldur's or Icewind--I'm out of spells. I've even put it on the lowest difficulty setting and I keep dying, and I've gotten past the grace period and now it just gives me a game over when I die.

Look, I'm hardcore, since September I've been making my way through the entirety of the Infinity Engine games, I'm on to Icewind Dale 2 after this one, and I'd really like to not have to say "i beat the whole Baldur's Gate saga, the Icewind Dales, but I gave up on Planescape", so...how do I cheat my way through this? I know there's a trainer for the original version of the game, but I'm playing Enhanced at this point, and I'm on a Mac,. Any ideas? The second half of this game is just so rotten compared to the Sigil segments.

There are scads of walkthroughs for P:T. Google is your friend.

Gee thanks that's a help. If you read my post, you'd know i'm not looking for "what do i do next" but how to deal with the shadows overwhelming me and my lack of resources--but hey, thanks for the useless comment!

What is the point of cheating to "beat" the game? By cheating you're not actually "beating" the game.

The poster above gave you some valid advice.

If you really want to cheat here you go:

But let me stress the fact that if you enable the console you're no longer "beating" the game.

Aw, man, but if I don't "beat" the game honestly, that means my cheevos won't be worth anything!

Listen, Planescape: Torment does a lot of things well, but combat and dungeon crawling is not one of them. The game is much more focused on its cityness than on its dungeons, which are pretty poorly designed, particularly compared to, for example, Baldur's Gate 2 which I finished up a couple weeks ago. It don't bother me none if I've "beaten" the game or simply seen the ending or whatever. There are different engagements that one has when playing a game; challenge isn't particularly one of mine; and as I said, the final dungeon--did I mention I'm on the final dungeon and I've done everything else?--doesn't really hit the "challenge" engagement either, it's an overwhelming. It's like the second floor of the castle in Trials of the Luremaster, or Throne of Bhaal, which goes past creating interesting combat encounters and simply overwhelms you. If you find that sort of thing fun, more power to you. I don't.

Either way, thanks for an actual answer.

I don't get it. What is your struggle here? if you have difficulties turn the game difficulty down and it's cake walk. and if you have problem playing mage switch back to warrior. have you explored the game world before getting to this point? by that point in game you should have lots of op equipment and full party THAT FIGHTS FOR YOU if you need it.

Uhm, not in the fortress they won't.

Just stock up on healing charms before going in. You don't need to fight shadows at all, they're going to keep spawning anyway, all you need to do is to pull levers on every machine and go through the portal.

if you have to cheat that means you aren't smart enough to play this game

You can run and avoid the fights. The thing you have to do is pull the levers.

Gameplay matters a lot here. You can run around the whole area and clear the shadows one by one before interacting with the mechanism levers that teleport you into fights. A few new patrolling shadows will spawn but it's nothing near as difficult as it would be otherwise.

If you have some earlier savepoints or are willing to do another playthrough there's good levelling to be had in the Rubikon modron maze, Curst after sliding into Carceri, and Undersigil (accessed from the Clerk's ward). Get +20 or higher CON and the tattoo of the lost incarnation and you will be outhealing anything the shadows can do to you.

Some excellent HP and AC boosting rings can be gained by beating the fiend from Moridor's box in Curst Gone, and using the wishing scroll in the warehouse to get an item of power when Curst has slid into Carceri and is being swarmed by demons.

Not sure about others but I only cheat after beating the game. Been about 15+ years since I've played this and glade it came on Steam (was about to buy the CD again after hearing the new Torment game not being as great - haven't bought it so can't really say myself).

Also, is the game difficult? I don't remember it being so when I played as a teen (I played during AOL or a bit after and no real online user guides for assistance?) Granted, I only played on normal mode and beat it just fine.

No judgement from me- everyone enjoys games in their own way. I'm bad at some types of games, so I use cheats to get through so it can be less frustrating, and some games I like the challenge. As long as you are only cheating in single player games, go for it. If you want to do it on ultra hard mode and challenge yourself, have fun. As long as you are enjoying the game and letting other players enjoy it too, then it's no one else's business how you play.

Personally I think cheating is not necessary in PS:T and part of the fun is exploration and dialog. Also, running almost always is an option.

But if you got stuck in the last area, don't have any more recent saves, don't want to start all over but are eager to end the game, I understand that. Especially when this is your first playthrough, you missed a lot of XP and good items, died a lot throughout the game, did not stock up on healing items and maybe ended up evil (all factors that add up to making the endgame harder).

The only cheat I know of is the cheat console.
Note that the description on how to edit your game file is for users who bought the game directly from Beamdog. If you bought the game from Steam, your game files may be on a different location and/or maybe even named differently. As I got the game from Beamdog, I cannot help you here.
https://forums.beamdog.com/discussion/64483/pst-ee-console-commands-and-codes-how-to/p1
Note that I certainly do NOT recommend cheating in PS:T and that in my opinion it only makes sense at all for a later playtrough, to experiment with minor differences in dialogs and/or if you find saving and reloading after each decision too tedious when trying to get the Balance in all Things achievement.
Also keep in mind that anything concerning installing game mods or fiddling with game files always happens at your own risk, so be careful and make a backup copy before you change anything.

You're going to hate me for this, but up to a point, the answer is actually git gud.

The number of shadows in the fortress directly correlates to the number of times you died in a run, up to a point. You'll maybe want to die a couple of times, but stay under 10/15 deaths unless you're ready to rock.

Kind of uh, late advice since you're already at the fortress though. GL.

I am pretty sure the OP has moved onto many other games by now as the original post is 6 years ago.

To anyone new having issues, the answer is to just run past them and hit the switches to move into the next area.
rgoodness May 19, 2023 @ 7:46am
Heh heh heh I cheated the ♥♥♥♥ out of this game six years ago and got the same ending as you did and, as the guy under you said, I moved on from it years ago. Wait until you hear what I did to beat Elden Ring!
