So what's a good book then
I assume, most of you think that the best fantasy book is LOTR, but in terms of all these myriad of universes such as Forgotten Realms and D&D, what's a good book to read?

A good one, not something like what most Sci-fi people churn out nowadays such as Games Workshop compost or Tamriel fanfic.

EDIT: No classics, I've read them all.

I haven't read it but the Game of Thrones books have had a lot of praise.
I'm not a big fan of Harry Potter but I think everyone should try and read through at least a few of them to see what it's all about.
There is a novel for The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion called The Infernal City. Even though I was a massive fan of the game I found the book to be not that interesting but it had some concepts that I would love to see within an Elder Scrolls game.

That's some of the stuff I know.

Harlen Ellison. H.P. Lovecraft.
Bah, guys, I said - no classics. Perhaps I should put it into my original post.

Nope. I really don't read a whole lot of this type of fantasy, but A Song of Ice and Fire is the best I've some across thus far. I want to get into tabletop role-playing though, starting with Pathfinder.

The Kingkiller Chronicle by Patrick Rothfuss. There are two books so far (I say so far because I hope there will be more): The Name of the Wind and The Wise Man's Fear.

Raymond E Feist. Some of the best stuff I've ever read. The whole series is amazing. It starts with The Riftwar Saga. Do yourself a favor and read these.

I've read "Fire and Dust" by James Gardner last year. It uses the Planescape setting, starting in Sigil, and the story is quite "dark" at times. It was a great read and I recommend it to everyone here who played PS:T and wanted more of that.

Margaret Weiss and Tracy Hickman - all of the dragonlance series and most of the character tie-ins. Loved them.

Pages of Pain by Troy Denning. It's somewhat similar to Torment and set in Sigil and revolves around The lady of pain
