I really think its down to what type of a cRPG you like playing really, and if you like doing a lot of reading, if so, then I would also class PST to be the best cRPG out there.
I do love me some Baldur's gate and it is certainly up there in my top 5 games of all time list, but once again when it comes to the combat side of things I tend to lose interest and have never really enjoyed these RTwP mash-the-space-button-every-2-seconds affairs.
Tend to engage in way more slaughter than your typical DnD based campaign also, which loses its appeal quickly and especially at the higher levels when you're felling dragons left and right with your legendary artifacts that are seemingly a dime a dozen.
Turn based still reigns supreme for me, and so I gotta give it to the likes of Fallout, Arcanum, Underrail, Dead State etc.
I've heard nothing but good things about Age of decadence, just waiting for the next sale and I'll pick that up too :)
2nd. Fallout 2
3rd. Baldur's Gate 2
4th. Knights of the old Republic.
5th. Mass Effect 2 & 3
Today Avellone & crew can't released games like this anymore. :/
I'll admit the setting was cool and some of the story had me intrigued, but holy crap is there anything in this game except talking to people? If I want to read a book I'll go read a book. I've played visual novels with more interactive gameply than this.
And yes I've played BG 1, 2, Fallout 1, 2, IWD, KOTOR, etc and thouroughly enjoyed all of them.
If the characters, writing and worldbuilding/setting can't draw you in then it's not the game for you.
I'm in the same boat about some other recent releases which have received high praise (Pillars of Eternity; I absolutely hated that. I just could not at any point find a single interesting or relatable thing within the story, the writing was dreadful and I didn't care one iota about any of the characters even after learning their backstories)
Different strokes and all that.
We already had a thread with the same premis. The problem is that almost all thinks PS:T is the best! not the way around. I personally don't know any RPG fans that would list BG2 above PS:T
