There is also the beginner guide on the wiki:

For medals, on top of defeating the bosses you have to feed your fairy (you can click the button at the top of the fairy list when it shows 8 as satisfaction for a consumable that often gives medals) and challengers (just defeat the first one over and over, it should be fairly easy as long as you have a decent bit of research on your dishes, it will give you 1 medal each time you defeat it).
Winning against challengers will also permanently boost the recipe you used (giving it 1 secret per challenger's rank).
Your aim in the short term is to beat area 12 to unlock something a bit like monuments (you just spend gold to multiply your current stats with those but it's still a good way to get further easier).
Outside of all of this, it's really much like the first climb to baal in this game, you will have to check your "pupil" tab for your rebirth multipliers and "retire" (rebirth with a themed name) when it would be enough to get you at least one area further, you gain a decent amount of medals from beating the areas, and don't forget to put yourself to work in the restaurant of the highest zone you defeated for extra money.
Before retiring, you can spend any remaining money into buildings to permanently upgrade the zones (the "Build" button from each zone).
Once you get the hang of it, reaching zone 30 is not all that hard, and if you imported the "I win" file from itrtg you should have a good enough starting boost to get there even faster.
On the kongregate version, you can use a pet token or export the "I win" file (from Other > Statistics > Other), import that file in ICE (not necessary but will boost the early stages of the game), play ICE until you defeat zone 30, export ICE's "I win" file, import it in ItRtG (kongregate version once again), save online, and then just load online on the steam version and you will have the pet.
Ryu planned to flesh out ICE and debug it completely before bringing it to steam, but the last message about this from him was more or less being about ICE going well but he still intended to bring it to steam because he more or less promised to do so.
So if you don't want to go through kongregate to get it, you can continue to wait and eventually you will get to do the same thing but through steam instead.
TL;DR: it is out but you can't get it right now without going through kongregate to unlock it.
This is one of my big scares, even WITH all the pets...I'll still only have 1.8 campaigns running (10 and 8 pet wise) gimping all growth returns eventually due to highest growth being in dungeon or on alch / blacksmithing (or gimping divinity runs).
2 things that really need work: The UI is TERRIBLY laggy in the Kongregate version. And the Import ITRTG is asinine. I was struggling through, dealing with the lagginess that needs a SERIOUS overhaul before you bring it here, and the tediousness and blandness of it (Cooking is a hobby/passion of mine irl, but this "game" is soulless), but once it refused to accept my save, I was done, not dealing with this crap for an "exclusive" pet, no matter how many benefits you tack onto it.
I have no idea what is bad ITRTG. You export the code from ITRTG, import it in ICE and done. The same the other way around. That is done within a few seconds each. Nothing hard with that.
I know it has some issues, but to change it and make the game more fun to play would require me to put in many hundreds of hours to rework it. I don't have the time for that. I'm self-employed and need to think about how to make money to survive, and I just don't see much of a chance that ICE will be successful anymore. The only reason I port it to Steam and Android is because I promised it to players and that everyone can get the golden dragon without the need to switch platforms.
That said, while the game has some issues, there are also quite a few players who like it. It is just a short game compared to ITRTG and you can finish everything within 2 months of playing. It also has a lot of automatic progress and options, so it is much more idle than ITRTG.
As for the lag, well it wasn't much laggy for me at all, but alone a port to PC will remove a lot of lag because the WebGL-convert adds a lot of lag.
Maybe it is something to do with only recently started the game on Kongregate, or if it was ItRtG that had the blank user name, starting a "new" game there, immediately importing progress from Steam over the top, and then exporting the points before things had synced up properly?
One of the things that could be causing this is that when you open more than one game, all but one will show an alert on the side bar (the chat being disconnected but it also mentions saved progression and successes).
To be extra certain you would want to "reconnect" before exporting the file, and then "reconnect" on the other game's side before importing that file.
I am not sure if that's the real cause of the issue but it is worth taking 2-3 extra seconds to reconnect just in case.
