Question about space mining
In the skill line, what are in those ? boxes? Are they skills that make mining more profitable? It's going to take me hours to get to the first one.

Right now the mining perk tree is not in the game. Once I get that done you will be able to select perks like you do with weapons, hacking and first-aid that make mining more selective, faster etc. Weapons, hacking and first aid are only skills with perks at this time.

The best way to make money mining is to upgrade your mining turrets at this time. You can then upgrade to a ship when you earn enough money that has more turret slots/heavy turret slots to gather more ore. This is a quick tutorial I posted a while back.

Thank you for the reply. I don't like the minng ship i have because it only has 2 spaces for mining lasers. Well it has 4 weapon spaces but 2 seem to be for only missiles. So I'm going to load my save to before I bought it and see about getting one that can equip more. Which ship do you suggest for beginning mining?

Probably go to a Wanderer EX-2 with 2 heavy mining turrets or save up for a Basilisk which has two heavy turret mounts and a light turret mount with way more cargo space. Also, a quality cargo expansion really helps.

Mining is pretty peaceful right now. The next patch adds the occasional enemy ship that will scan you and attack - so, having a few missile launchers on your ship will help. If you have good gear you can mine and earn money from enemy ship loot drops.

Others may have some ideas for how they progressed as far as ships go.

Gosh, it looks like merchant ships can only equip 2 mining lasers except the huge one that costs way more than I can afford. I guess I'll try getting better quality lasers. It's just that it took me over an hour to fill this thing up.

Heavy mining lasers make a huge difference - that is, each turret generates twice the amount of ore. You also gain skill in mining (not perks yet) that increase the amount of ore you get from each turret pulse. Some of the smaller ships like the Wanderer make a big difference because they have heavy turret mounts.

Wanderer:
2 heavy turret mounts
2 light missile launchers
Costs around 7 million credits.

You will earn a lot of money quick with that ship if you eject low value ore.

Ok, I'm going to save up for that explorer ship. Actually I need to go to the research facility to level up to put points into intelligence so my mining skill goes up fast. After filling up a cargo hold with 3500 ore the mining skill went up 1 level. Well inteligence on my miner and charisma on my seller.

By the way, the game is great so far and I'm looking forward to the next update. On a different note with the ship descriptions it looks like some ships are made for blockade running and smuggling. Will those be in the game?

You should also look for some Intelligence armor for your miner, depending on your average crewlevel that bonus can go up to 40+ Int from a full set.

Just as a reference how slow/fast mining raises:
I had to mine ~125.000 units of ore at level 30 (76 Int) to get from Mining 1 to 20 and more visual : I've empty'd the whole asteroid field in one run (maybe 8h nonstop mining with a ship with 3 heavy mining lasers)

Thanks titanopteryx - Smuggling yes - blockades are just flavor text for now, but something I'm thinking about.

Dang. Well I'm only level 11 so it's going to be a while before I reach 30. Is the research facility the only way to get character levels right now?
