I just cant beat the santa clauses etc. Any viable strategy for it?

question: how do i unlock the wierd tech tree boxes the ones with the diffrent colour and the ???????? as name i cant use stars on it and somehow i unlocked some but i dont know how, does anybody know how i do it?
