Stuck in an endless battle? (sort of)
I'm in realm depth 20 and got in a battle involving an Elemental Familiar. Long story short, due to a stupid mistake (accidentally selecting "provoke" instead of "cast" which threw off the whole battle), I wound up with all my monsters dead except for my Dragon Scout and Ebony Ent. By some miracle I managed to take out all the creatures but the Elemental Familiar, and that was when things got... uh.

Due to the Dragon Scout's ability the Elemental Familiar worked its way down to having 0 attack, which was great for me, but the problem was, my Dragon Scout and Ebony Ent couldn't do any damage to the Elemental Familiar, and neither of them had any offensive spells, so the battle just dragged on with none of the monsters able to do anything, forcing me to flee.

Is there some trait of the Elemental Familiar that I'm missing here that basically screwed me over? What happened there?

Stalemates happen. There are many ways you can end up with a stalemate, in this game. When it happens you must flee.

Stalemate forces you to concede (losing the battle). Always target the hard enemies before they get to invincible status

It is not a trait. If there was an active trait on it, you could see ith with Inspect.

Likely it has an artifact with a very high defense. Fatigue in battle is supposed to help make sure near stale-mates don't happen by increasing the damage you take over time, but if everyone is doing 0 damage, not sure if ti helps any.

That's why I always use poison/burn

As a general rule, I try to make sure each creature has at least one low cost spell gem which casts a debuff with continuing HP drain, like Bleed, and Poison. It doesn't quite work out for all of them, and there are times your MP is drained, but it's good enough that I've eventually won two apparent stalemate encounters.
