Leveling Weapons

I am a returning player to Darksiders and I had been met with, after a few years of not playing, this game. I ran into leveling up my chaos eater to the first time and it got me thinking, since I don't remember it and I couldn't find any response for the life of me ever since I started looking, what is the point of leveling up the weapon? I remember there being a use for it, but when I try to remember the reasoning as to why, nothing comes to mind.

I just thought that reaching a new level gave the sword more power.

It's possible it just goes up more in damage, but I thought there was more of a point to it.

The point of leveling weapons?

Probably the increased damage, that is reported in a big pop up in the middle of the screen when it gets a level?

weapon damage only. Chaoseater on level 1 takes 4-5 slashes to kill a low level zombie ,but maxed out is 1 hit kill.

It increases damage and allows you to purchase higher level moves for the weapon from Vulgrim. The Level indicator next to each move is the minimum weapon level required to learn it.
