Bayonetta not starting at all with screen that says "not supported" and locking machine
Downloaded Bayonetta and have attempted it through Steam. Does load up the game screen, then before that starts up, a blue blank screen comes up with the words floating on the screen saying "not supported" . To get it to go away, I have to totally shut down the machine manually. Ctrl/Alt/Del doesn't even work to stop it. Thoughts?

Likely that the game is attempting to set a default resolution that your display device cannot handle or has no support for. eg. attempting 4K @ 60hz when you use a 4K monitor that can only support 30hz, or if you have a laptop which has a lower than HD resolution.

First of all, pressing alt+enter will force the game into windowed mode where you can manually set settings you need. if your computer is locking up however, this may not work, however it can be useful if you need to use it in conjunction with other solutions too.

- If you have DSR (or AMD equivilant) setup, try temporarily disabling it until you can get the game to start and you can set the game's settings to those more sensible for your device.
- if using a latop, ensure that the game is set to use the dedicated GPU rather than a integrated one (ie. set program to use high performance processor in nvidia settings)
- Try setting the game to run at 640x480 screen resolution. - To do this, right click on the game exe, select properties. Select compatibility tab, then tick run in 640x480 resolution - once the game has started, change to what resolution you want to.
- the game folder has a folder called aspect unlock, you could try opening disableaspectlock.reg which enables the game to use widescreen resolutions.

Not particularly related to the game, but it's worth remembering that windows key + L will open the windows lock screen - in some circumstances (may be dependent on windows version though) when you have what seems to be a lockup, that key combo may override it when other combinations like ctrl+alt+del don't work - if anything it should allow a safe shutdown/restart. No guarantee, but worth remembering the next time something seems to stop responding.

Just figured out you can press ALT+Enter to switch to windowed mode. Then you can change the graphics settings to the correct resolution and enable full screen again.
