I like bayonetta combat but I hate nier automata?
Why is this?

Probably because they are two completely games with different play styles - like comparing apples and oranges.

Play Bayonetta for the gloriously mad over-the-top combat, and the way you can slot together combo after combo and a decent challenge. Play Nier: Automata for the world building and story.

There isn't particularly much that is similar between them really except some similar-ish looking animation sometimes (Subaru charge up vs nier heavy weapon charge) and that both are by platinum games

I'll admit that I also wasn't much a fan of the combat in Nier: Automata. But it's very important, for that game, that you try not to focus too much on the combat. The store is truly where Nier: Automata shines.

Just because Platinum Games worked on both of them,, doesn't mean they both have to be the same game or that it was developed by the exact same team.

Bayonetta was directed by Hideki Kamyia. NA was directed by Yoko Taro. Two completely different visionaries

Nier Automata's combat is largely more RPG focused, where you are prepping your skills and weapons and elements to better approach enemies. It can be stylish, but it's not nearly as flexible as Bayonetta's combat where its largely more focused on being fluid and sequential. It's better to enjoy Nier Automata more as a story experience with a larger dose of RPG flavor than trying to make it super crazy and stylish, which really isn't the focus for that game.

I went in to nier:automata expecting similiar combat to bayonetta. I think this is where I went wrong and it may have killed my enjoyment of the game. i might give nier another shot and just try to enjoy the story for what it is.
Possibly, yes. I think sometimes with sequels and/or new games from favourite developers we have expectations that are different from the game.

Perhaps try leaving N:A for a little bit, to forget what you played so far, and then when you go back, play from the beginning, giving it a clean slate.

I've done this with quite a few games (eg tales of berseria) and when I approach them fresh, I've tended to appreciate them and enjoy them a lot more.

Nier Automata combat felt like a step down from Bayonetta to me.

Try Transformers Devastation, it's basically Bayonetta with a TPS instead of a lockon mechanic.

It's pretty much the same combat as God of War, Ninja Gaiden and NG II, the entire Devil May Cry series (developed by the same team), and going all the way back to the 3D Castlevania games on PS2 (Aria of Sorrow and Lament of Innocence), not to mention Lords of Shadow / LoS 2, so if any particular game isn't feeling the same, they probably added some other element to make it seem not-so-cloney.

Transformers Devastation is nowhere to be seen on Steam at the moment.

Maybe you prefer the more magical and stylish aspects of bayo while nier is just more sci fi/tech weapons/guns then magical.
