Locked at 60fps. Why?
I've noticed a trend amongst Japanese developers where they lock the fps at 60 (neptunia, Berseria, etc). Why is that?

I would buy this right now if it could take full advantage of my 165hz monitor and gtx 1080. From my experience upping the resolution is nowhere near as impactful in a fast paced game as raising the fps.

More than likely because the developers have tied the game's logic and speed to the framerate (which is still a common practice in Japan from what I understand, especially when it comes to this genre and fighting games), and unlocking it would probably break one or two aspects of the game, at least. Going back through the code to make sure it all works well at higher framerates is possible, but it's a lot of work they likely don't see as being worth it.

I would personally love to play the game at a higher framerate, but It's not the end of the world as 60FPS is acceptable (hell, it's nice to finally have a version of Bayonetta that can actually stay locked at 60).

I'm with you man. Not buying it for just this reason.

Mostly what Platinum Conquest said. Keep in mind the Bayonetta is a PS3-era console game, and that it was designed around it. Unlocked-FPS gameplay would require reworking the engine, I suspect.

Also, it's fast paced yes, but it's precise, too. Better lock the the fps and ensure everyone have a smooth, even experience. Maybe add an option to unlock it in a patch, but don't do it at launch.

So now we've reached the point where people ♥♥♥♥♥ because it's locked at 60fps eh....I could understand this thread if it were locked at 30, but 60? Just wow guys, what next in the future, ZOMG the devs locked this at 120fps?!?!

Actually, there are already such threads for a few other games since people get 144 MHz screens. But hey, it's the steam forums... and "pc masterrace" crap... don't expect something different. Not even on a 7 years old game ;)

You can't understand this thread because you've obviously never played at 120 fps. It's just like how console players argued for years that 60fps wasn't important because "the human eye can't see more than 24fps".

I was definitely disappointed to find out it was frame locked as well. Running it maxed takes so little of my GPU at 1440p that 165 frames stable is easily possible. It's always the Japanese developers which set arbitrary locks like frame and resolution locks.

Its a 10 years old console only game.

On the one hand, it is a trend, but on the other, games like Bayonetta are tied heavily with frames on how to do stuff.
There are a number of FRAME DEPENDANT moves that can enable the player to do all sorts of cooler nonsense in the game....however, frame dependant moves there you need to press a button at/between a select number of frames during animations for such to come out.

Normal gameplay you may not care all that much, but if you want to get the higher scores and cooler combos, you may start integrating such.

As a result, yeah, it's tied to the overall engine of the game, and raising/lowering the FPS will screw with everything internally, making things a LOT harder to pull off.

I appreciate the explanation. I wasn't aware it had frame dependent moves. I thought it wouldn't be a problem because Bayonetta 2 had a variable frame rate iirc. But if the engine is anything like a fighting game then there is nothing that can be done.

Too bad because 60 fps in a fighting game doesn't bother me but 60 fps in a game where the camera is constantly swinging all over the place actually gives me get a bit of motion sickness.
Null_User Apr 13, 2017 @ 7:49am
Here's the two problems. On one side, frame rate dependent stuff, like moves, as explained above. On the other side, a 60 fps game aparently looks worse on a screen capable of much higher hz, like 144 or so than if it were played on a 60hz monitor. At least that's what I keep getting from some people who own these monitors.
BombermanGOLDEN Apr 13, 2017 @ 8:00am
I have a 144Hz monitor, and as long as things don't tank below 60FPS, I'm fine.

But yeah, for games of this type and calibur, it's a standard for Japanese developers to use fighting game rules to tie in the harder-to-pull moves with timing via frames.

Seems like one way to alleviate this is to instead do it via animations, though that also may present a lot more challenges than most are willing to tackle.

But then again, once you get your preferred style down in the likes of this game, being able to literally rapid-fire giant fists and feet will practically be a GODSEND should you want to go after the highest difficulty.
Painter X Apr 13, 2017 @ 8:06am
Honestly considering its a PC port of an almost 7 year old game that was originally optimized for the Xbox 360. 60 FPS is a godsend compared to what we normally get in ports.

Dont get me wrong. 120+ would be ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ awesome. but 60 shouldn't be a "Won't buy" situation.

Yeah... how DARE people want progress! :steamfacepalm:

Buy a better computer, and a better monitor. Then, you might understand. Until then, take your whining elsewhere. Or go play a super nintendo and wonder why anyone would want better graphics than that, or better gameplay.

Besides, how does wanting 144fps hurt you in *any* way whatsoever? Other than the fact that you are butthurt because your monitor doesn't support it? Play your games at 60fps if you want, but don't hate on people just because they want faster. It's called progress.

And yeah... in five years, I'll want my VR at 4k per eye and running at 144fps. I'll expect even more out of a flat screen experience.

In the meantime, I'll still buy Bayonetta, because it is an amazing game. I also realize it is an old title, so for me, 60fps is better than not playing it at all.
Il muto Apr 13, 2017 @ 6:02pm
I think it's the same case in Nier, it is 60fps dependant BUT there's a patch that unlocks framerate with no problems at all, I played it myself at 144+fps and it looks amazing, so sad the game already bored me.
So I think there must be a way to unlock fps, but we need some expert to do it, because I have no hope the devs will do this for us.
