All I did was simply get PR for each nation (40%) aside from Planeptune (60%) up to level 4 PR and left it at that then watch the event and complete the chapter, rinse and repeat. By reaching level 4 PR which provides you 40% shares, you unlock each of their respective events under the "Converse" tab (you'll know when the speech bubble says they're feeling drowsy or tired).
As for losing shares if you die, get hit, or transform, don't worry about it since the event is what matters not the shares. In fact, I'm certain my Leanbox was below 40% nearing the end of the game but I still obtained the true end. You simply need enough shares to reach the events and leveling PR is the fastest way.
Happy Nepping!
Same with Neptune and viewing the 60% shares Histoire sub event.
If you have any scouts with "Share Usage Down" stack em. With 4 of them you eliminate all share loss from taking damage or being knocked out. This also allows you to keep and more easily maintain the "Top CPU" shares buff, which all 4 CPUs and CPU Candidates can have at the same time.
It's pretty easy to keep your shares maxed-out though, just keep picking up the repeatable quests and when your shares start to dip you report a few of the quests you've finished. Between normal play and the items your scouts bring in you'll usually have a handful of quests ready to turn in at any time. Not sure if the Top Shares buff is worth it but the maintainance is pretty trivial all the same.
It simply means whichever nation has the highest shares, their respective CPU gets that "crown" and is exactly as you say, slightly increased benefits such as damage, unsure on health but it's quite minor either way. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
