I've taken to hitting L2 as soon as I kill them.
Yeah; the audio mixer in this game is additive, non-normalized. I.e. the cheap "no-clue-wtf-we're-doing" approach. Be happy you haven't broken the 100% volume barrier yet. Since the mixer doesn't normalize correctly, you can get audio clipping which results in horrendously loud static that'll make you think your entire sound system just died a horribly gruesome death.
Seriously, I don't know why the sound issues in this game are that bad, but they are terible.
