Also, this guy has 99% positive feedback including a variety of other devices, so I believe I was mistaken in my initial assessment, sorry.

you can either buy an older TV(not sure if you still can, posts very old) for dirt cheap,
or
you can buy an amplifier(not sure wat that is),
or
you can buy a video converter that will convert to HDMI(which apparently, you've already tried)
I'm just grasping in the dark myself, good luck.
Personally, I'd try to find someone that has said older TV, bring your system and test it, and then go from there.
I have the french model N64 that supports RGB so I've just got mine hooked up with an RGB scart.
Just to be sure about your problem, The N64 is working correctly as far as you're aware and the cartridge is booting ok? If for any reason the game doesn't load you will be stuck with a black screen anyway. Tried multiple cartridges? Blowing on the cartridge? (like it says not to do on the thing but it always seemed to work back in the day)
Just asking about those as well because if the solution is something that simple it'll save you spending any further money on such devices.
All in all I would try an Svideo lead mixed with that box if it is a case of the TV not receiving the signal, but unless you can find anyone with any experience with these units it is a little bit of a gamble that the device may not work.
