Which version to get? Steam or windows store?
This game is amazing and just wondering which would be better to play? Which has more players online?

I already have halo wars 2 from windows store and I think it lets me play with xbone players too

Your answer should be obvious if you ask on the STEAM forums.
A lot would depend on which version of Windows you have. If you have Windows 10 and an Xbox One, you get more options to play the game, and can play on both Xbox and Windows 10 with the same purchase. But then again, you can basically do the same thing if you have a Steam Link. It's all preference and what hardware you have already.
.........and whether you want to support Microsoft, beyond providing an OS that is.
I recommend steam, since it seems like it will have more players which means that you will have a better multiplayer experience on pc

Well, you're supporting Microsoft, regardless of what you do. But, Valve gets 30% or something here. If you don't support Valve's monopoly on PC gaming, then the store is the only other output option.

Steam is not a walled garden like the Windows Store, you wan't see any game here forcing you to buy the latest OS version to play the game unlike the Windows Store.

Yet, what happens if Steam shuts down in the future? Alot of games will be rendered lost AND unplayable. I'm not saying I support the store, but, I only use Steam grudgingly. I'm primarily a GOG user, personally.

For MP, Steam would be the best bet if you want to play MP on PC. Windows Store would be the better option if you have an Xbox One and want to play the MP on there and not PC.

Neither Halo Wars: Definitive Edition nor Halo Wars 2 on the Windows Store have crossplay with Xbox One, and not a lot of people bought/are still playing the games on Windows Store/Win10 Xbox App.
I know you're supporting Microsoft m8. I did say that. It's whether you want to go "beyond" that degree of support by purchasing through their store.

Hope that clarifies. :)

Thank you for clarifying. But, I just wish mandetory game clients wasn't a thing.
If you play on Xbox and PC, I'd go with the Windows Store version. It's the same price and you can play the game on PC and Xbox and your saves carry over. You also get a bigger online population for this game on Xbox if you're into that. Otherwise, it doesn't really matter where you get it unless if for some reason you're still on Windows 7/8 then you get the steam version.

I think Steam is the better option because of the player base
The Windows Store version is inferior and has 0 population.
