They will run up and talk to you in AA2, they also group up together and do... stuff. There's actually a lot going on with the AI in that game, but you need to have a lot of characters running around, and they need some time to form relationships with each other. The movement speed does make it look kind of crazy though, high athletic characters basically teleport across the school so it's hard to follow them and see what's going on.
