I have beaten that level just today again after a long time with Bonehart + upgrades on normal.
I remember not spending too much money in the end because he will destroy your towers and you are left empty handed.
But today I pretty much had little to no money left and was still able without loosing hearts to beat the boss but I had also little to no towers left and only some few baracks and two good towers, the fire spell killed him in the end.
In addition to saving money one further strategy also helps, (re-) build many tower slots with cheap lv1 towers.
He destroys towers rather randomly so you can increase your luck if you have some trash towers rather than a few fully upgraded towers and empty tower slots.
And as said, use your fire spell on him multiple times it really helps a lot.
I also manged to immediately do it on veteran difficulty without losing any hearts the first time I actually manged to apply the right strategy. Before that I just lost completely, it was all or nothing. Though if I remember correctly, the first wave of the whole stage is actually the hardest one to not lose a single heart on when you play on veteran difficulty. There was always one pesky tiny critter that managed to sneak through with 1 health unless you were really microing and timing everything to perfection. And if you build better towers to deal with it, the next waves become much harder. After that, it's quite easy once you know how to deal with Umbra's blobs.
And of course you can beat Umbra with a perfect score without saving up in advance if you just micro your hero furiously, it is just a million times harder to do. It's a bit like cracking a safe instead of simply unlocking it with the code.
