Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War - Dark Crusade

Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War - Dark Crusade

The tau relic unit.
Please tell me I am not the only one who finds the kroot beast thingy to be a little... underwhelming. I think the tau would be better suited to have two relic units, furthering the impact of the choice between the killing blow or path of the hunter. Keep the kroot monster if you take the path of the hunter... the one that benefits firewarriors and kroot etc. But give them something more suitable to the path of the killing blow. Like an XV104 riptide battlesuit or something. Details for which can be found http://warhammer40k.wikia.com/wiki/XV104_Riptide_Battlesuit
there.

It stand at double the height of an XV8, so it has the size for a relic unit... and would be a massive ranged platform, where as the kroot beast is a melee monster, this would be for ranged firepower, like a walking mini titan, or a walking baneblade or something more suitable to the technologically advanced path of the killing blow... Just an idea.

This game was distributed way before the Riptide existed, so I tend to doubt (especially since they've already moved on from DoW 2) that they'll even bother. Sucks too, I'm not sure if the Soulstorm DLC even has an air unit for the Tau since during that time they had nothing like the Sunshark Bomber or Razorshark Fighter, so any Tau players on Soulstorm are SOL on that one too. I just hope DoW 3 brings back the scale that DoW 1 had so they can have all the armies with their awesome tech, including all the new Tau stuff. And I know they like trying to go for the epic campaign like they intended with DoW 2, where there are real characters with narrative and all that, but I definitely prefer the scenario Dark Crusade had, where a ton of races are fighting over one planet. The thing they need to do with DoW 3 is take that same concept and blow it up into a battle accross the stars, taking planets under your control and launching wave after wave of fleets and armies onto your poor, unsuspecting rivals. But hey, with our luck we may just have to settle with another Dark Crusade scenario (as long as it isn't another DoW 2, I'm fine with that).

So... What they need.. and I completely agree. A galactic conquest stucture to the campaign, if they want real characters like in Dow 2 then make the honor guard units more personalised? Give them a name and such, make them more valuable. Return to base building and such. give every army some new love. Oh and the Tau DO have a flyer in soulstorm. They have the barracuda. The necrons are the ones who got shafted imo, their flyer is the scarabs that the tomb spiders spawn... thats it..

Oh and they didn't move on from DoW 2. THQ went bust, and relic was sold to sega, and sega made relic push CoH 2 and leave DoW 3 on the back burner

Ah, well I never personally played Soulstorm, all I knew was there was no flyer for the minis and I just assumed they didn't bother (now I'm wondering where the Barracuda is with the minis). But yeah, galactic conquest is something that needs to happen in a DoW game. In fact, it's what every WH40k game needs in my opinion. But yeah, I know what happened with Relic and SEGA, I was just saying they were done with DoW 2, and now the publishing rights is supposedly in SEGA's hands, so here's hoping that doesn't go down too hard. I did hear about a supposed Total War: Warhammer Fantasy, which sounds like it would work well, but a lot of people are worried about if WH40k will enter the Total War series, which I don't see as a bad thing as long as they do the crazy space battles in place of the naval ones.

The barracuda exists in minis for battlefleet gothica, they are also available from forge world for the tabletop game. and they're a bit bigger than the BFG ones obviously.

Ah, well that explains why I never saw them. It's hard to find forge world stuff on a shelf and the same goes for Battlefleet Gothica in terms of the places I go.

Seeing as you seem to know a bit about WH40k, I've been trying to look into some of the RPGs they have. Have you played any and would recommend one? I ask since some friends and I need something new to play yet we all really love the WH40k universe and got interested in looking into the RPGs. Oh, and do they require maps and minis to play? I ask that since I've unfortunatly had to move further from my friends and we need something that just requires a webcam and some imagination (with of course the dice rolling as is usual, lol).

Well, You can always create your own. My cousin and I did it all the time when we were younger. Often we were a pair of sniper scouts and we had various missions and objectives to complete. the enemy guards were proper space marines and the map was set up from wooden building blocks, a grass coloured camo blanket and some books underneath for hills. If you want an RPG style of gameplay online, You could try DoW 2/retribution. If you have not already.

As for knowing the official ones, not really. I like to adlib. Naturally we played with minis. Oh another option is a bit of role play. You can make a game out of it. but do it through text mostly, like a WH40K version of DnD only it doesn't take years to complete. You can do this through typing or even on pen and paper, and if you cannot all be on at the same time, then there is always email as a fallback. Naturally this would mean creating a character, preferably within the confines of his/her/its races codex rules for hero units. and then using your imagination to come up with various challenges for your party of heroes to complete. Also LARPing, not that I have done it. It is a thing though... Live Action Role Playing is dressing up in the costumes and actually acting it out.

Your best option would likely be to create your own scenario though. Dont be afraid to borrow from others ideas, you're not trying to turn a profit so technically not abusing any copyright laws etc. Plaguerism doesn't apply when its just you and your friends X3. I wouldn't mind a bit of Text Rp, I have some practice in it. Likely I would end up as an Eldar hero of some kind such as farseer or autarch, or perhaps a female tau shas'o, OR just play all the enemies. With your imagination the possibilities are endless.

Some very inspiring advice. I actually used to LARP before with my friends. Hey since we share a common interest (that being WH40k of course), would you mind if I sent you a friend request?

You could also draw up a grid each, make them exactly the same, place units on said grid but dont show your opponent.
Make it like battleships, ensure you are not cheating via webcam, but obviously dont show off grid squares and locations. Then type in your attack. IE: Plasma cannon to E5. The plasma cannon could have an effect to represent the viscoucity of the rounds by hitting the square behind/beneath its intended target. So E5= E5 and F5 hit by the shot. Units get one move per turn, they can move or fire. but the move is one square at a time. Have hit points based on armor and cover saves, all the normal dice rolling would apply for that sort of thing

I beatcha to it :P

Well I do have to say you have quite the imagination when coming up with games, lol.
Tau aren't religious irrc so a relic unit for them is kinda pointless. it's merc labor anyway
Maxwell Sinclair Oct 9, 2013 @ 4:48am
I know the tau are not religion. But in Dawn of War speak Relics are required to build the ultimate units in the game such as an awakened monolith or a baneblade. Hence it is called a relic unit.
PowerKristals Oct 12, 2013 @ 8:06pm
Well for one thing if the tau got a riptide battlesuit, which btw came out after this game, then the imperium would need nothing short of a warhound titan
Maxwell Sinclair Oct 13, 2013 @ 2:16am
Sounds fair to me. I like warhounds. Dawn of War, Supreme commander scale XD
